First Time Post/66 Mustang Help

Howdy from Texas.

I bought my 1966 Mustang back in August of 2005. It has gone from crap to...prettier crap.

My question and dilemma is that of the wheels. I bought (4) 2006 16" Mustang Wheels off someone locally. They look great to me, almost Eleanor-ish but they only cost me $160 total.

The wheels fit on the car, as you can tell from the photo. But at the back you can tell the wheel barely fit on the car where I have only 2 lug nuts holding it on (I just wanted to take some photos with them on)

Now which route should I go?

Should I remove the original studs and press in new, longer ones and then just put a .5" spacer on the wheels so they dont rub on the inside...

OR

Buy those all-in-one spacers that have the lugs already pressed into them and all I do is bolt them on?

I want these wheels, but I dont know how or where to get the parts for them. They wheels fit the bolt pattern perfectly (kinda ironic, 40 years later ford returns to the original 5x4.50 bolt pattern) but the studs are no where long enough to accompany spacers.

Thanks and any comments on the vehcile are appreciated. As you can tell it is a restomod with no chrome/all lights relocated-removed/and it has no engine (yet)

there are a number of suppliers who sell adapters, perhaps try one of them

you need to run the adapters rather than a spacer. any spacer thicker than about 3/8" should not be used, personally i won't use a spacer thicker than 1/4". the reason is that with a spacer you are putting all the weight of the car on the wheel studs rather than the snout of the hub, with an adapter you use the snout of the hub to support the adapter and the snout of the adapter to support the wheel.

The wheels appear to sit pretty far in; have you turned the steering wheel lock to lock to check for frt. end interference?

Be prepared to spend as much for a good set of adapters as you did for the wheels.

Id just use spacers. I talked to a guy today about some and they are $40 each for up to 3/4" spacer/adapters. The fun part will be cutting your stock wheel studs down so they dont sit past the spacer.

I can't remember what size spacers I am running, they are either 1.25" or 1.5" spacers. I am running the 17" 05/06 wheels on my car. It looks like that is what you will need to get those tires to sit right. Good luck.

Do you have the place where you got yours from?

And have you had any issues with spacers as far as performance or them breaking or anything? Above all I want safety over looks.

Im gonna go ahead and recommend Fred Goeske at www.wheeladapter.com Hes an old school guy that apparently is well known. His are hub centric, $60 ea for up to 1.5".... Reenmachine also recommended him in my other thread.

I'm using 1.25" spacers on my 67 to so I can run 17x8's. I got mine off of ebay...but I can't remember from who though. Here is a link that can get you started: http://motors.search.ebay.com/wheel-spacers-ford-mustang_W0QQfromZR40.

Sorry I can't be of much help as far as your question goes, but I hope you resolve the issue because those wheels look great with the car.

btw, that paint looks awesome and I'm excited to see how the car turns out. good luck with everything!

Thank you for the kind comments. That paint job was a "home-brewed" paint job. It still needs to be wetsanded and buffed/cut with our buffer. And I am glad you mentioned the wheels went with the car, for a while there I wondered if I had made a mistake.

I am going to go ahead and buy 2 spacers from eBay and see how well they fit. If it does the trick, then I will buy the other 2 and finish it off.

My #1 Concern is safety though, are these safe at 75 mph or less?

Id really suggest getting the ones from Fred Goeske... they are a bit more but I hear horror stories about peoples wheels falling off on the road. Thats something Id rather spend $20 a set more and have the right ones.

Duly noted, Ordering 2 from him right now. I will see how they fit and sit...then get the other 2 if it works out well.

The car is still no where near driving condition, but I want to get this out of the way so I can focus on the nightmare of my seats...I was stupid and threw away my 66 stock seats and now I have to figure out what will go in the car.

Unless you cut the seat platforms down, your seat choice is limited. Those stock seats were really low profile. I ended up using Flofits and taking the adjusting sliders off of the driver's seat. It is fixed at my driving position and mouhted directly to the floor. Without doing this, it was very difficult to slide my legs under the stock 14" steering wheel. If you use a smaller wheel, you will have a little more room. Flofit seats are about the lowest profile I could find at the time - 3-4 yrs ago. Maybe something else will work today. Good luck.

i have fox body seats from an 86 GT in my 69 and they work fine with the stock wheel, although i am using a 13" grant gt wheels at the moment but the fox body seats sit pretty low if you use the stock early model seat tracks. you'll have to drill one extra hole in each for each seat track slider, so 4 holes total for a pair of seats but it's a breeze to do. i highly recommend this method as it is very easy to do and well worth it because the fox seats are so much more comfortable. also any fox platform seat will work doesn't have to be from a mustang. you could use t-bird, cougar, fairmont, ltd, capri, whatever
