Fishing Expedition for a Local Mechanic

Well, I am at a loss here...

I am going to be doing the first upgrade to my car. I have decided that I am starting with the gears and other associated parts. I am going with 4.10s, SpeedCal, and getting a shift kit. Pretty straightforward.

My problem is, I can only find one person local to me to do the gears, and he wants like $600 just for labor. So, my question is,

is there anyone on here from Michigan? Specifically, I am looking for someone in the Lansing area, but will drive if necessary. Perhaps the Grand Rapids area or the Metro Detroit area?

I will let this guy do it, but $600 seems PRICEY to me. Is this way out of line? FWIW, there is no way I am going to put the gears in myself. I am just not willing to devote the necessary amount of time and effort to it, nor do I want to invest in the job-specific tools.

Thanks.

Matt

$600 isn't outrageous, but you should be able to find someone willing to do it for around $400. Check with Aamco, I've had friends get gears done there at reasonable prices.

Get on NMRAdigital.com this is the site with all the guys that race NMRA (Ford only races) and there are quite a few guys in MI that have performance shops for a living, and race for fun.
Sign up, go in the Lounge forum and ask and you should have 10 guys throwing their shop number at you.

A rule of thumb for gears is 500-600 parts and labor, but this varies by area. You get a shop like SGS in PA that does almost only Mustangs, and your are at $450, middle of BFE and you get robbed at $650.
