Ok so I had a small spot of rust on my passenger side fender. Started with 220 grit and sanded through the rust. Took like 0.5 seconds to get it gone, was barely on there.. Very minor surface rust. Then I smoothed out the lip of the fender with 400 grit. I then taped it off and sprayed it with primer. After I was done I removed the tape and there is a clear line where the tape was. Anyone have any recommendations on how I can smooth everything out and make it look 1/2 way decent until I can get the car painted? Also I got minor overspray off to the parts where it wasn't taped (Thought I covered enough but apparently not)... What are some easy ways to remove the primer overspray?

to get off overspray...

1) get 2000 grit wet sand paper, and go over all of the oversprayed areas, should take no longer than a half a minute on each over spray spot....

2) Get a buffer, and buff with a light compound, and the overspray is gone!!

To get rid of line...

1) When you prime something, it is given that you donot just paint over the primer, you must wet sand the primer prior to paint job as well. Get a peice of Wet 400 grit paper, and wet sand the entire primed area and concentrate on the tape line, you will notice it "feather" out. You will not be able to feel it anymore, and you're ready to go.

note: Since you did not do any body work there, you are not forced to use a hard block when wet sanding, because you are not trying to make it flat, it is already flat, but in case you feel you "need" it to be "perfect", use a hard block for "yourself" but it is not neccessary.

PS. if the rust was only on the surface, you probably could have sanded it off w/ 2000 and buffed it w/o using any primer at all lol. hope it was bad enough to use primer, ( i know it was after u used 220 grit!) because if it was as slight as you made it seem, you kin dof just wasted a little bit of time, and added a primer color to the car.!

Well. There was a small spot on the car that was just barely surface rust. But then right next to it there was a scratch that had rusted. The small dime sized spot was completely gone within a minute of me sanding. The gash took a bit longer. It looked like someone really gashed it (it was only like 1/2 an inch long) and then it rusted pretty deep there. I'm not trying to perfect it I just wanted ot take care of the rust before it started to spread. I dont want it to look perfect it's obviously not going to as the primers not the same exact color as the car. But I want the line gone and have it smooth out so i'll wet sand that. I figured a light wetsanding and then buffing would get rid of the overspray, just wanted to check.
