Fl820 oil filters shrinking!

just read from other site. I might go grap a few at my local walmart before they change to midget version. Or use mobil 1 and never look back.

So they're just as efficient, but .32" shorter? I don't see a problem with that. It's probably just a different supplier, but still made to specifications supplied by Ford.

Strange that they carry exactly the same part number. Typically, in engineering land, a new p/n is warranted when form, fit and/or function changes.

Perhaps Ford sees them as interchangeable, that any application using the short one will accept the old, long one even if they're harder to swap.

I know on my 5.4 4x4 f150 its hard to get a filter wrench in there. So a shorter one will likely help!

they probably didn't want to change the part # because it would confuse all the noobs at autozone. but when i last bought my filter they had both types there.

But the F1AZ-6731-BD number should be revised. -BD is Ford's internal revision code. Usually 1st time parts are - AA. i think a change in external lenght definitely justifies a revision number

Yup. From an engineering POV, the bills of material for the short and the long are different: Different stampings are used for the outer case or there's an additional trimming step to shorten the long stamping down. As well, the tooling and process required to make the long and the short would be different, from the equipment handling the filters during assembly to the robots spraying them with powdercoat.

I wouldn't think Ford would care all that much about NAPA and Autozone. I'm surprised that the supplier of the filter itself didn't demand some sort of revision to the filter part number due to the physical differences. How does Ford track this? How does it know what's been installed when the part numbers are the same?

MOTORCRAFT OIL FILTER PRODUCT CHANGE FOR THE FL820S
The length of Motorcraft oil filter FL-820S (F1AZ-6731-BD) is being reduced, allowing for easier removal and installation. There are no changes to the performance attributes of the oil filter.

The smaller filter size will also result in the pallet quantity being increased by one layer or 120 pieces.

The chart below provides a summary of the changes:
