floppy shifter - 67-68 c4

my shifter is floppy as hell. i have a 67-68 c4 auto, it wont change gears nor will the shifter stay in place - it just moves up and down freely, except for when in park etc. the engine is not running (yet) i still have a few electrical things to do, but i just don't understand what i'm missing.

the button works fine, but the thing just won't stay put. is there a spring or something that goes between the tranny and the shift stick?


i'm really frustrated with my car right now, so please help!

maybe if i can talk to someone on aim/msn i can clairify things a bit better

figured it out. was my valve body.

The shifter itself wears out over time. The bushing on the pivot does wear out. If I recall correctly, there is a rebuild kit out there.

all it was was a stupid mistake. i just forgot to line up the manual shift control arm witht he main valve.
