+1 get rid of the stock H pipe, theres so much restriction, go with a o/r H then you will get some sound out of it 
I recently purchased a 1996 GT and want to put flowmasters on it. I dont need the catbacks, just want a little better sound. Can someone tell me how much different it will sound with just the mufflers welded on?
You will notice a little bit more sound if you are upgrading from stock and having some flows welded in. That is what I did. Then just the other day added the o/r xpipe.... now it sounds like a v8 should (at a minimum =)

With weld in flows it will sound 2 x better.
Add an x or h pipe with high flow cats 3 x better.
x or h with no cats 4 x better.

The sound will be different with the weld-in flowmasters, though you'll really notice it when you get rid of the factory pipe with 6 cats on it
In fact, if she lives in an area where emissions are not an issue, she maybe should skip the muffler swap and just replace the stock midpipe with an offroad h pipe, assuming she can get it done in her driveway. It's cheap, easy to do, and will sound great. That's what I would do first.

i got a 97 GT with just the flowmaster 40 series and it made a big difference..its a nice ride...not to loud and u could still definitly hear your car
and than when u rev it, it sounds real nice

well if your looking for just a little bit of sound, you should look into some longtube headers with an an o/r mid pipe (h or x) and then finish it off with a Mac 3inch catback. that would be just what you need 
.. lol but no al seriousness welded in flows will make it sound better. most after market muffler will make it sound better, but the catless mid pipe is where its at!

I upgraded from stock to weld in Flows and it made a great difference in sound while being a little louder. By itself, it was a great upgrade.
The loudness didn't come until I went with my offroad Prochamber. I can't keep my foot out of it because reving it out sounds so good.
