I am currently looking at a 97 gt and had a few questions that i need help with.
The car is a 5-speed with ~110000 miles

1. Fluctuating Idle- i drove the car everything ran fine but after i drove it i let it sit and the idle would move from about 500 rpm's to just under 1,000 rpm's. the cahnge would occur about ever 10-15 seconds. Does anyone know if this is an easy fix?

2. I noticed a large amount of oil collecting on and around the oil pan. would you think that the pan just needs to be replaced or would it be something worse?

thank you for your help

a few things can cause the idle to do that.

first does it do this in any pos. of the climate control switch? next time go out and turn the climate control system off ( no heat defrost or a/c) and then see if it still does it.

if it don't do it then your problem is related to the a/c system, remember a/c runs in the defrost pos. and mix pos as well as max and normal a/c

a a/c low on freeon can cause quick cycling like that and can fool the eec so the idle will do that.

and the oil leak could be anything. I would have to see the car to tell you where thats from. on my car it's comming from the right hand side cylinder head.

The AC wasn't blowing cold air so i guess that could have been that.

That is what i thought about the oil but i was just hoping for an easy answer/solution.

THanks again

So it idles good with the a/c off right?

if so either don't use the a/c or fix your a/c leak.

i dont mean to hijack this but i have a similar issue i was curious about. When my car is idling at a red light and i switch the climate control knob to different positions the car seems to hesitate for a second while the air starts blowing. If i turn it to a/c it seems to hesitate a good bit more and stumble a little bit, i always figured this was because the serpantine belt had to adjust to the new load but from what you said it could be something else...?

when the a/c compressor is ruinng the PCM needs to adjust the idle speed, sometimes that takes a second so thats why it stumbled on you.
