weird question...I was giving my boss a ride home today since his f-350 is broken and he tells me to get on it so i do...it makes the usual clicking noise when i floor it...I tell him i think its pinging because i put mid-grade in it...he says in his 69 it did that because the flywheel would hit his starter and he had to shim it more....could this possibly be happening to my car?....

did it always make that noise from the start? ive never replaced our starter, but ive done them on about 13 different cars. not all of the cars use a shim. i know when i did an intrepid, i had to cut the shim down bc the shim was actually hitting the fly.

Yeah if you had a chevy engine with vertacal mounting starter bolts. If you have not had you car on the a dyno with wideband then you are probably running lean and since you took the egr off you made the cylinders even hotter, thus causing pre-ignition this is probably the sound you are hearing. You need to check your timming and get on a wideband to richen your a/f up to cool the cylinders.

no shims for our starters, they can only bolt in one way. It's more than likely pinging

if you still suspect starter, the bendix could be slightly hung up.

some have whacked the starter with a hammer and checked for a lack of noises.

You would want to retard the timing, so turn it down to 7* or 8*. But don't leave it like this. You are losing power this way. But if you can't afford to fix it, then this is a free and instant fix.

There are sooooooo many things that can cause pinging on our cars. A worn but still functioning sensor, carbon on the pistons/cc's, not enough fuel pressure, et cetera.

PM me with your e-mail address, and I will send you an w-mail I sent to someone that was trying to diagnose a pinging problem.
