Immatriculation expiring nov 30th. I always kept the car plated even during winter hibernation. But this year i m thinking about paying for just "remisage". Question is:

From january 1st 2005, all owner of a car with an engine bigger the 4.0 liter will have to pay a special tax. Mine will be around 90$. By renewing plates on the car right now, i ll be okay until november 05. If i stop my plates now and pay to have it on the road in march, will i pay that special tax in march for the remaining 6 months???

Sorry man, wish i could help.
In all honesty, that's the first time i have ever heard about this new tax.
I would imagine that there could be some leverage in certain situations, but then again, the "saq" can be brutal...

Mike, the new taxe does take effect in January like he said. I knew all the amounts/per liter but I dont remember anymore. This taxe applies to the cars not older than 10years. Will be hit once with the 1995, then next year(2006), well I wont have the 1995 but lets say I do, I'd be find and pay the regular plate fees cause the car would be 10 years...Its something like that.

So after 10 years old, you have to pay? i guess speed 545, you'll be alright for awhile then?

Edit: Sorry, or is that cars up to 10 years will pay?

For example, if you have a 1994, you will NOT have to pay the extra fees in 2005 cause the car will be older than 10 years. All the 1995 to 2005 will be paying the extra chit starting in January 05.

I'll be digging in my wallet for your number Mike. You'll have a phone call in a minute.

You said it alright

One way or the other i ll win. So i m going to pay for storage plate and renew next march or april. In the worst scenario i ll save about 85 $ instead of 130$.

I am in the exact same situation as you. Nov. 30 the plates are up and I was wondering also if it would be cheaper to renew now but I sent it in as "In storage" instead. What really pisses me off about this "tax grab" is that you have people on the roads driving 1988 Tempos or 1985 Caravans that are pumping out more oil than gas from their engines and they save the most money. They pay almost nothing for insurance, base price for the plates and don't spend a dime on keeping their cars properly tuned. Now if the government is so concerned about the enviroment, those are the cars that should be paying more for plates. After a car is 15-20+ years old, start charging more. This would encourage people to purchase newer and therefore cleaner burning cars which in turn will also help the economy (sales of newer cars will increase). Now I know not everyone can afford $30 000+ cars but there are many 5 year old cars out there going for very cheap prices and if those are to expensive well then it's time for public transit. Bottom line is 99% of the time a 2005 4.6 does not pollute more than a 20 year old 2.3 liter engine but then again when is the last time someone has heard of a "smart" government. Take care and happy paying .

Yes it is We pay the most for our plates and rides on the worst roads

And Toplesstang, you re absolutely right. And to complete your argument, we, for the most of us, just ride about 7 to 8 000 km \year. So even a Civic who s owner rides 24000KM\year will pollute more than us. Well i guess tax on gas is taking care of that
