then i would suggest the cheap CAI from ebay.
i bought the kit from the seller "streetdomination"
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/89-9...ewItemQQcategoryZ38634QQitemZ8024704149QQrdZ1

The total cost was just a little over 40$ shipped to my door.
i got it as a christmas gift, just got it today, also put it on.

I was suprised by this little cheap ass kit.
Just the cheap price makes you think that it will be junk. But really its not that bad, granted you have to make some modifications for a good fit, but i felt the money was well spent.

The modification is where to tube meets the TB.

With the pipe out of the box, you can hold it up and its a good fit. But when you try and put the rubber piece to seal it up, the pipe would hit the strut tower and the rubber wont flex far enough without slipping off the throttle body.

First we tried cutting the pipe, we took about 3/4" off the end that meets the TB, gave a lil more cleanance but still the rubber would slip off.

Then we cut the rubber piece. The piece is 3" long, we took off 1"

We went back and it fit pretty good. Could almost take off a little more pipe but i left her alone.
The kit includes a metal clamp to hold it together, this cant be used or it will mess up the stuff. I just used some hose clamps to hold it nicely.

Farther down we get to the MAF, on the CAI it moves the MAF foward about3-4", the stock metal bracket will not work here, will hit the body of the car. The kit includes a new bracket, But the stock bracket has rubber pieces that take up space. The new piece is just metal, so the bolts were too long. I just didnt use the bracket at all. Works fine, as its all a tight fit anyway.

Getting the 90degree pipe in the plate and the maf is pretty hard. I removed the MAF again and put them together outside the car. Then put it in as one.

People always complained about getting the filter up in the fender, saying it was hard.

PSSSH, not even close, was way easy. Dont even have to take the wheel well cover off. There is a stright shot to it from the front, just had to stick the filter on. Angle to screw on the clamp towards me, and tighen it up.

Now lots move on to looks. Out of the box, the tubes look well polished, a tad rough and really a mirror finish, but hell its 40$.

I took some Mother Alum polish to the pipe and make it shine like crazy. looked much better.

The filter looks low quality, the cover on the smaller end is glued on, and came off easily. I didnt want to risk it falling off so i went to glue it back, didnt have any glue so i used some RTV silicone ( dont ask, but it holds it nicely.)

Also this filter can easily be upgraded to a quality K&N filter later on.

I was suprised by the looks of the CAI, people always said they looked good, and i always thought "hmm yeah."
They look better in person, going from the dirty black ripple rubber POS tube to a nice fat, shiny smoothe tube, really looks great under the hood. Really helped out my dirty motor, its the first thing you notice.

before, plain and boring
View attachment 493773
View attachment 493775
after, much much better.

Now onto performance. No real notice SOTP gains, maybe a SMALL SMALL SMALL one, real small. Not even worth mentioning. While i am sure it picked up maybe a couple HP, from the smoother tube and supposedly colder air from the fender, i couldnt feel a thing.
But the motor seemed to breathe much much easier and more freely.
The exhaust sounds meaner, a tad louder and a little deeper and throatier.
Also makes a noitceable "whooosh" when the throttle is suddenly pressed.

so my conclusion is.
If you have been thinking about a CAI but know its not going to do that much, and dont want to shell out over 100$ for such a minimal gain. Try the cheapy ebay kits. While i am sure a BBK or mac would fit right up with no cutting or anything. I felt much better saving over 100$ and doing a little cutting and work myself. I went into this install expect next to no gains, and was actually suprised and quite happy with what i got with the exhaust tone and looks.

Got the cool looks and sound of the CAI but didnt waste any money.

Changed the exhaust tone? It's all in your head.. that kit didn't do jack **** for the performance of your car, other than sticking out under the hood like a sore thumb!

Doubt it adds 5 horse... but it will be louder under the hood. That's probably what you're hearing. It's not the exhaust. The stock airbox flows basically the exact same as that kit and it still pulls cool air from the fender.......

The car probably runs better since you moved your air filter out of the path of "fan wash"

Time for some simple green on the rest of the engine bay.

Geez dude, rough day?

Maybe he removed the air silencer too. I remember when I removed my air silencer, my exhaust sounded different.

well in the first pic, my setup before was the stock rubber tube, the nasty ribbed one.

Was sucking hot air from the hood and such.
but overall i am pleased, i didnt expect much from it, and i didnt get much so it works

Tomorrow i am going to install my UD pulleys i got, i hope to at least feel these things

well i enjoyed reading his cai review..........it's only a cai but, it's nice when people get parts they describe them as best as possible, take some pics, etc..........can't really knock 40 bucks for a cai..........if it cleans up things some and some one wants to try one it beats paying 130 bucks for one.........plus, given what he had on there before this was probably a good move......
hey foxfan i noticed your car has a/c.......do yourself a favor and keep it on there......it's nice to see cars with a/c as it seems thats the first thing to get the axe sometimes..........
you realize now you have to do a write up and review of your under drive pulleys too right???

I didn't realize you had a conical filter sitting in the engine bay like that, good job on the fenderwell kit

It's your car so do what you must. As long as you like it then I guess it's ok.

Would i run one, NO, but thats me.

You will notice a gain from the pulleys. I would suggest leaving the stock alternator and water pump pulley on and just changing the crank though.

i might leave the alt pulley off, my car charges great in the winter for some reason, but last summer it was... ok, i dont it was putting out 100%

also in that pic above, the alt pulley looks almost the same size as the UD one i have.

so leaving the Alt pulley off, will that take away all the gains i will recieve???

and about the A/C i really havent 100% decided yet.
It already converted so all it needs is a reacharge.
its been drained and hasnt blown cold since i have had the car. I went last summer with no A/C wasnt that bad, ia m considering deleting it, i really like the clean looks of the FRPP kit ( one that moves the P/S pump up.) I dont expect and gains from it, pretty much a looks mod, really cleans up the bay. But again i am not 100% sure.

I swear I've read posts about your engine knocking or having piston slap when you rev it up....Isnt that why your building a new engine?

oh yea, back when i raced my car the first time, when the motor got really hot after i abused it. It would slap. We think its some piston slap. But i dont know, i havent heard it in over 6 months. and yeah that why i am building the motor. Back then i thought my motor was trash. I dont think its bad now. I take much better care of it and i have tuned her up and the like. Runs nice. What i really wanted to do is buy lots of nice goodies for this motor, and then later on, build a good short block and take all my good stuff to the new motor.....

But i think alot of what i was hearing back then when i revved it up, was an exhaust leak i never fixed, the slap came from where the exhaust leak came from so maybe the noise was related to that leak. Since then i have fixed it so.....
But back then i knew next to nothing, i know much much more and have more expierence now than i ever could dream of back then.

leave the a/c

especially if you're keeping it a street car, cmon.

at least that's my take on it. i don't wanna have to roll down the windows of my car if it gets hot, especially after i get all new weatherproofing

yeah i mean, the ac compressor is free wheeling when it's not on anyway, you really gain no power at all, just a weight savings, and most people could shave weight off their car just from cleaning out all the crap in it.....lol
i think it makes the car worth more in the long run....i mean, if you want a drag car go buy a gutted p.o.s and have at it, but for a nice street car.....it makes it worth more ......then again maybe i'm biased because i live in az......i just notice it's getting really hard to find these cars anymore with functioning anything.....and theres no need for that.....especially if it already has it.....but thats only my opinion.....
