I'm new to this whole thing, but i was wondering if any of you have some suggestions on how to perform this swap and a good web site to find parts.
So far this is what i think i need: Let me know if I'm right or not.
1. T-5 for 4 cyl mustang circa 80's?
2 Bell housing (not sure where to get)
3 Clutch pedal and linkage
4 Tail shaft from s-10 (what year)
5 shortened drive shaft
6 different slip yoke
7 pressure place
8 fork
9 throw out bearing
10 pilot bearing
11 clutch disk
I'm not to sure if i have everything, but i would like some suggestions as to where i can get these parts. I would also like to know what donar they need to come out of if from a junk yard.

Here i come to save the day!

I did the T-5 swap in my 66 Mustang, my 65 Barracuda, and my 63 Falcon Wagon.

1. T-5 use a v8 tranny, does your car have a V-8?
2 Bell housing, try to get this with your tranny
3 Clutch pedal and linkage (read my write up on how I did ths)
4 Tail shaft from s-10, I don't like this mod, sure it puts the shifter in the factory position, but the factory position is like 12" too far forward, use the stock tail shaft and the shifter is closer to you, be careful of the bench seat though. Also, the S-10 tailshaft needs mods to get the speedo gears to work right.
5 shortened drive shaft, yes, typically 1" BUT, measure it yourself to make sure.
6 different slip yoke, yes, your Ford-o-matic yoke will not work, keep it though, hard to come by
7 pressure plate (just get a clutch kit, includes pressure plate, disc, throw out earing, pilot bearing and alignment tool)
8 fork, yes, try to get this with the tranny
9 throw out bearing, see item 7
10 pilot bearing see item 9
11 clutch disk see item 10
12 flywheel
13 tranny crossmember (make your own)

Depending on what combination you go with, cable, hydraulic, or Zbar clutch mechanism, will affect which bellhousing and fork to use. Also, the flywheel needs to be the same balance as your engine, 28 or 50 oz. You'll need to choose diaphram or 3 finger clutch.

OR, you can buy the Modern Driveline kit, which is complete, quick and fairly painless. They do quality work.

You can put a T-5 behind anything. As a matter of fact, because of me, there is such a thing as an adapter plate to mate a Ford T-5 behind a Chevy bellhousing, long story.

Post this question over on TFFN.net (The Ford Falcon News) and youll get a flood of answers. The short answer is to use the s-10 tailhousing and shiftrails on a mustang V-8 (not 4 cyl) trans. The 4 cyl trans is not as strong, and has a much deeper first gear that will have you grabbing for 2nd annoyingly quick. You will also need a crossmember at the least, clutch linkage can be reused if you already have a v8 4 speed and dont mind the old rod linkage. One thing that I dont see mentioned much is that with the s10 tailhousing you need to replace the pilot bushing that keeps the output yoke centered with the mustang bushing.

EDIT: or just follow latamuds advice.

Thanks for all your help

Thanks for all the help. I know now that this probably isn't the right forum for me, but I really appreciate all of the guidance.

My car has a newly rebuilt 170 I6 and i would like to keep it that way until i Have the money to do a full resto and install a EFI 302. If you have anymore suggestions for the T-5 to I6 setup it would be greatly appreciated. Once again thanks so much. long live the classics

Hillis,

I agree with Decurion, TFFN.net is a good sight for Falcons. I have my issues with the site but it is the best Falcon site around right now.
With an I6 I still suggest a V-8 type T5. With the extra 3 gears more than what you have now your gas mileage is going to increase. I went from 13 mpg to 18 with the t5 swap in the Falcon. Actually, all of my 3 T5 cars were getting 18 mpg. A 170 will do better.
Hopefully the moderators won't mind the non-Mustang topic. Lets see how far we can go with this. 63, from the factory used a 5 bolt block, meaning 5 bolts that held the bellhousing to the engine. If you have a 5 bolt tranny, which, if you have the 2 speed Ford-o-matic, you probably do have a 5 bolt block., then you will need a 5 bolt bellhousing. Find a 5 bolt bellhousing for a 3 or 4 speed, and then you'll ned the adapter plate to go from 4 speed to 5 speed, its a spacer that mounts behind the old bellhousing and allows a newer T5 to bolt up to.
If you have a welder you can cut up your old transmission crossmember and weld it back up for the T5. Make sure to keep the correct pinion angle. Before I remove the old trannies, I measure the distance between the center of the tail to the top of the trans hump. When I put my T5 in I jack it up to that point and mock my crossmember up.

RE: Tailshaft

I am also a larger guy at about 6'5" and ia was wondering if the original tailshaft from a mustang would work for me with a bench seat. let me know.

If i need to go to buckets it doesn't really matter. It's just $$ and time. But will it work temporarily. I'll try not to ask to much. I have already gotten alot out of this. Thanks again

correct me if im wrong on this but the s-10 tranny is non world class and the tailshaft has provisionings for a thrust bearing that the world class doesn't hence the 4 cylinder tranny. but if thats the case you could take the tail shaft housing from a camero t-5(they are world class) and use on a v8 t-5. also you need the matching coverplate for the tailshaft.

Using the Mustang tailshaft keeps moves the shifter jut in front of the bench seat. I'm 5' 7" and needed the bench seat forward 1 notch from the rear most position. At that point the shifter would touch in 2d, 4th, Rev. I moved the bench all the way back and it is fine, but now I'm on my toes for accelerator. The short shifter is quite comfortable though. You probably have the bench seat all the way back so no worries. Check out my link I posted earlier on how I did the swap in my 63.
