I recently finished putting back together the engine. Check out the metallurgical defect I found on both heads! On the picture below, I already cleaned out coolant residue from intake manifold gasket surface. Later, I filled the voids with gasket material before installing the intake manifold gasket and intake manifold. Hopefully it will hold. I just didn't have the funds to replace the heads :nonono:
I found similar issue on half axle. I was tracing down the rolling noise from the back end and found similar metallurgical defect on half axle. That defect was right on bearing contact surface. It destroyed the bearing over time!

That's pretty common in my experience. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Unfortunately, I didn't take the picture of the old intake manifold gasket. Gasket was all messed up with residue at the place of the defect. It was probably leaking coolant into the intake.

I believe that is [minor] corrosion and is not uncommon (as gsjohnson said). You can try a little RTV (just enough to fill the dents) before placing the gasket down but the gasket ought to seal the area just fine.

This did not look like corrosion. It looked like metallurgical ( manufacturing ) defect

I did fill the void with RTV. I hope it is going to be ok
 
There is nothing wrong with what you are pointing out. Take a look at any motor you pull apart and this is a common occurance. How many motors have you pulled apart and not found this? The acid in the coolant eats at the metal causing this. If this was a metal defect it would be occuring everywhere not just at the coolant ports.

you're freaking out over nothing. i see engines and parts torn apart almost daily and this is not uncommon

what your pointing out looks like corrosion. aluminum corrodes in two ways. one is a white power and the other is called pitting. its nothing unusual. i would simply blend it a little and use some rtv.
 
I took apart two 5.0s before, but never 4.6s. I have not seen pitting style corrosion on iron heads of 5.0s. I guess this problem is specific to aluminum.

Still... I would not expect gaskets to get busted this way on normally driven and maintained, NA, 7 year old car :notnice:

On the positive note, I changed all the gaskets and cleaned up carbon deposits from pistons, head ports and valves. Engine runs smooth as silk now!

You could always get rid of your pile of junk Ford with corrosion problems specfic only to Ford and get a nice little bowtie.:rlaugh: :jaw:

On the axle noise.. You have it backwards.

The surface where the axle rides will have pitting when the bearing goes, it's the bearing that went and damaged the axle.. Most of the time this is caused by lack of lubrication ( low fluid level)


the damage to the heads in areas where coolant flows is common.. The hot coolant pools up and eats away at the aluminum.. You see this a lot when doing head gaskets
