ford racing hood pins are rusting!

bought these hood pins because their supposed to be stainless steel and not rust. I had them put on in april and now they look like crap. has anyone else had this problem? $35 to get 6 months of use out of them...

Can others post up on this one. I live close to the water and I have held off on getting a set of hood pins because I was afraid they would rust and mark up my paint. I really want to go for it because I have a fear of my hood flying up and blocking my view when Im driving fast on the highway. Not cool!

I need to get some as well. I want some high quality, rust free ones. I worry about the paint as well. I really don't want the paint cracking/chipping & then spreading out from the metal ring. Did you guys paint the hood after the drilled holes, or before?

im looking at getting the lock type ones with the cylinder locks, but idk, hood pin quality is such garbage

Just look at the type of stainless being used. Stainless steel is not rustproof. However, different types have different levels of corrosion resistance. A high Chromium content is desired for best resistance.

Just a FYI, those arent the best inorder to keep the hood from flying up from what i read....just to keep it locked.

They are better than any of the other that I have found so far, but I dont drive mine in the rain or salt, either. I might suggest contacting FRPP about it and se if they will not send you out a new set, or if you got them from Summit or someone, try to return them or have them replaced. If you ahve them replaced, occasional maintenance may be suggested, like coating them with some type ofsealant such as Zoops or some other product. It's not like you can scrap them beacuse you have holes in the hood now.

Wait a sec. The whole thing or the torsion pins?

My Ford pins rusted almost immediately - but it was only the torsion pin ring and I agree - it looks like ass.

I just sand them down with a dremel and zoop them up. not perfect, but better than the rust look.

If anyone knows who makes ALL stainless torsion pins, let me know.

Like stated above, stainless does not equal no rust.

Maybe an aircraft hardware supplier might carry them in a version with a higher chromium content?

Let me clarify for you. I was asking for anyone who knew where I could find 100% stainless steel torsion pins with 100% stainless steel torsion rings, preferably created with 300 series non-magnetic stainless steel. i.e ones that wont rust - as was indicated by the nature and concerns mentioned as part of the original post.

The tiny flakes of nickel plating on my particular torsion pins on my particular set of for racing hood pins seems to indicate that mine were NOT indeed ALL stainless, or perhaps the rings are simply made from a very shoody quality of 'stainless' and were then nickel plated to compensate for the low quality. I would like to avoid that in the future.

At any rate, the idea still holds true. If anyone knows where to torsion pins that will not rust on any part of them - stainless - anodized aluminum, titanium etc. Please share.

mo_dingo's got the best idea. too bad they dont shine like stainless steel.
some older cars like Chevells came with hood pins from the factory. ive been wondering if they rusted out like those others have from ford racing or if they held up.
anyone know where we could find the answer to that?

On the contrary to some who stated stainless steel rusts...

Yes some stainless steels rust, some much worse than others, however some DO NOT rust at all! There are at least 50 types of stainless steel alloys. Some created for holding a knife edge, heat resistance, easily weldable, springyness, RUSTPROOF, tensile strength, etc.
And easy determination, would be to take a magnet with you and see if there is an attraction to the part, if there is a strong attraction, there will be a likelyhood that the part will rust, but its not a 100% test, with experience you can determine the strenght of attraction of the part to the magnet.

The 300 SS family, the best are 304 and 316, many fasterers found at Home Depot are 304 or something very close to that alloy. "Fastenal" has both 316 and 304 fasteners, 316 fasteners are always stamped as to their quality "316 SS". 304 will rust to some degree in salt spray, it will discolor, with very light pitting, removable with a sandblaster(difficult to use sand paper), to make it look like new. 316 would be my choice for hood pins since ocean air/spray is rather salty and will corrode 304 to some degree. Torsion pins can be made out of a non-rusting stainless steel as well and still be springy but will have a slight magnetic attractance, likey made from 302SS.

Its consumer fraud that parts manufacturers says stainless steel when its not. But unless you have access to a gas chromatography spectograph machine, might be difficult to prove your case, unless the part is so badly rusted and pitted(most stainless won't pit deep if it does rust).
