Forgot Bumper Foam

Hey all.

This week I replaced the header panel grille and had the front end of the car apart. Last night once the job was done, I smiled brightly at my accomplishment only to look around in my garage and see the front bumper foam piece still sitting in my garage. I can't seem to fit it in without pulling the front bumper cover off again. Had a few questions I was hoping one of you could help with:

1. Does the front foam piece off any specific functionality or is it just for noise reduction? Sort of concerned driving without the foam installed.

2. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the piece back in without pulling everything apart again? Half of me sort of thought about cutting it in to three pieces and trying to get each piece in individually.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe I outta just suck it up and pull the front cover again.

The foam bumper is meant to protect your car in both low/high speed crashes, and you too - so in short, DO NOT leave it out or cut it up LOL. Just pull the front bumper cover off, it's not all that time consuming.

yea, it only takes about 15 min to remove the front bumper. do it right

Thanks guys. I guess I was just being lazy; thanks for getting me back on track.

I drove her to and back home from work today without the foam and noticed some funky air vibration/noise which I think was air from the road spinning around in the now open space behind the cover.

Foam will go back in this weekend.

Its called a bumper absorber and helps keep the bumper from sagging and fitting nicely and helps absorb crash impacts. Cutting it up to install it wouldn't be a good idea lol. Just pull the bumper and put it back in

It's main purpose is to keep the the front fascia formed correctly and to keep it from deflecting under higher speeds. It has very little to do with crash impacts.

If anything, you might want to put it back in just to keep the front fascia properly supported and to keep it from being pushed in under those high speed blasts.

after i put my cobra r bumper they bodyshop never put mine back in, said it didnt fit right. so i drive around for 6-7 months without it and u could easily push the bumper in. I really dont think it does anything in a crash, they break really easily just dropping them. anyone wants mine they can have it lol

If they don't feel the same, ask yourself why and why is the foam there for in hte front of the car.

Like LaserRed said, that front bumper foam is not intended at all for any sort of crash impact.....cars that use foam in their doors and fenders and bumpers for crash impact rating use a special kind of foam called GeCet. It's specifically designed to not break apart and the individual cells compress very easily....a very different foam than what we have.

The expanded polystyrene that is in our bumpers is nothing more than a bumper cover (fascia) support.

Go back up and read his and Turbo92PGT’s posts. Its main function is to keep the front fascia from going out of shape at highway speeds. As stated, it’s impact capability is very limited. Anything more than about a 3-5mph hit and you might as well have nothing at all.
