Ok, long time fox body lover, first time owner!!! Bought an 86 T top car with 6 cylinder. Planning on building a decently clean street/cruiser. Will be doing engine/trans swap,
brakes, suspension, rear end, etc.

I have built a few cars in the past, most recently and most in depth build to date is my 64 impala which was a full frame off restoration. First time doing a full frame off. I am not a motor head, I did install the crate 350 myself as well as did most the work in the build myself.

I am doing the mustang as a best bang for buck kinda budget build. I will save money where i can, like doing the cobra or cadillac brake upgrage, sn95 or GT rear end swap, Maybe painting or doing a wrap myself. I know for a fact the engine will be the most expensive of the build, however, I am still trying to do that on a budget so will most likely go with the cheapest buck to horsepower option.(ls is not an option)

My question is for any one of you fox body guys who have alot of experience in building them, and have maybe done all the swaps with 351w, coyote, and godzilla engines. I'm planning to get around 500-600hp. I know times have changed, swaps are getting easier and better market for parts needed, and 351w are becoming harder to find cores. I know a 408w mild build can easily put me at 500hp. I know coyote swaps are fairly easier now with lots of support, I may not shoot for 500-600hp if i go that route, just leave it stock. I know the godzilla 7.3 comes at about 440hp, high torque, and have seen easy cam and intake swap videos to make 600hp. But I know there are issues with having ac and power steering with the godzilla. I want my car to be a weekend cruiser that drives pretty good, has ac and power steering. Which of these options is going to be the easier to install and cheaper route?

None of those engines is a 'budget' swap, the least expensive way to go (in my opinion) is the 408.

Probably the cheapest route is the one you haven’t considered. That is a turbo V6. Lots of those have been done, and you’ll not be plowing any new ground. Just a thought.

I know they aint cheap, and I know someone always comes to say building a car aint cheap when the word budget is mentioned, But i just mean theres a difference between spending 8k on an engine vs 20, 40, 80k. So I know it wont be cheap, but still trying to find the best bang for buck option.

I've read and watched about that, I just gotta have a v8 though for that American v8 exhaust.

Being you don’t have a V8 to start with I would look for used and running 351W. Buy a Holley Terminator X and boost it. Your choice on auto or manual trans and get an 8.8 rear end. Go coil overs and a panhard bar and call it good.

I may be completely wrong but I think the coyote would be the cheapest route here and a solid choice. A gen 1 or gen 2 can be picked up for roughly 5-6k with the transmission complete drop in. You will need to use a control pack but really nothing to expensive. You are already starting with a v6 car so nothing you have can be reused to save on funds. By the time you do a 408 you'll have at least 8k in the engine then you need to control it and get a transmission that will handle what you are doing. I ran into a similar situation restoring my mach 1 but decided to stay sbf for the simple fact of that is what the car came with and I wanted the sound to match to car cant do that with a coyote. I think godzilla stuff is still expensive so I wont even comment on that idea. I will say this though whatever your idea is for how much this will cost it is going to be more speaking from experience.

I'd save up and get the blueprint 347 with the new 4 bolt main block. 408 will need a new hood to clear the taller motor. Call me old school, but foxes need that pushrod sound.

You can get a 351W under a stock hood. Several guys have done it.

Coyotes are not cheap to put in a Fox. You have to deal with accessories (power steering, AC, alternator, etc) and realize that a Gen 1 or 2 is about 385 fwhp. I’m not sure about shifter placement but ai believe it requires one that offsets to line up with the Fox position or mounts on one of the different places on the manual trans. If you go auto then the control pack will not control it or at least the last time I looked it would not so add another controller like a USShift there. This has been done a few times so do your research.

Any way you go (Coyote, 8.2 deck based motor, or 9.5 deck based motor) you need a plan and a budget. Cheapest way to get to 500-600 hp is a known used motor that makes that much or a stock one with boost. A stock Coyote with boost planned for later is a great choice.

Manual trans mission will have less loss through it than an auto but one that will hold that power won’t be cheap. A T5 is a no go at these levels so TKX or T56.

Plan the build and have fun.

I went through all this about a year ago, albeit the Godzilla never crossed my mind. At first I was intrigued by the Coyote, but after adding everything up the cost was WAY up there. Doing a 408 now, will have around 6k in the engine. Granted,my car was already built to handle the power (trans, rear end, etc) so I'm ahead there. With any engine swap, you can spend as much,or as little as you want. I could've went way cheaper on my 408,and used a lot of current parts from my 331,but choose to use different parts. In the end,I'm a big fan of keeping it Windsor powered.

I think everyone has their preference and nobody is right or wrong.
For me, i'd say i'm in the coyote camp, especially since you have a blank slate.
With that said, there is a video out there of a Mercedes Evo replica with a twin turbo ecoboost v6 in it. An awesome setup and kinda opened my eyes to ecoboost swaps.

Would be kinda cool to keep a ford v6 in an original v6 t top (I can't imagine there are a lot of v6 t top cars). But it's probably a lot to ask with all the turbo customizing that needs to be done.
