I just changed the pads in the front calipers of my girl's 2003 6 cyl 'stang. As soon as I took it for a test drive it started burning the brakes.

Turns out the calipers are not releasing the pistons when the brake is released. jacked up the front and both wheels are locked up. Can't turn by hand. I went back inside and the caliper comes off easy, the slide pins move freely and the pads slide easily on the metal retainer clips. I can easily compress the pistons again with a C-clamp.

The pistons didn't seem to have much trouble when I originally compressed them with a C-clamp, but I question why they would fail to retract if they can be moved manually.

Is there anything special about the 03 mustang that I have failed to do?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Does it by any chance have anti-lock brakes? If not then I would look further up the line such as the master cylinder (MC) or brake booster (BB).

Check the back brakes also.Take a look at the pad thickness and the condition of the rotors. Are the rotors very shiny like a mirror? Are the pads severely worn? Now if the backs are severely worn, you've got one of two problems.Either your hitting the brakes too hard due to lack of rear brake pads or the entire problem could be the MC or BB causing it.

Was it burning the brakes up with you hitting the brake pedal or all on its own? Does the pedal feel any different or make excessive hissing noises?
