Front crankshaft seal installation

I have a 66 Mustang 289 Coupe I am replacing the timing chain on. I am having a problem installing the front timing cover crankshaft seal. I used a seal driver to press it in, but it will not go all the way down. I can see a gap of about .025 between the cover and the seal on the front side. Isn't it supposed to go all the in so there is no gap? I am afraid if I hit any harder it will damage the seal. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Are you sure you are putting it in the right way? As I recall, one side of the seal has a tapered eadge, which is the side you want to drive in. When I put mine it, I was also trying to be careful and didn't want to ruin the seal, but after not being able to get it in, I decided to give it a few good whacks. It went in fine, no damage at all. I used a block of wood to put mine in, but a seal driver is much better.

Alos make sure you've got the right seal. The older one have the seal installed from the rear, the newer ones go in from the front.
