Front Tint Illegal In MI? What!?!?

Ok, I'm all for officer safety, and if these crazy tint rules REALLY work, then I'm all for them. However, I've NEVER seen anyone pulled over by a cop, and have the cop stop IN FRONT of the car they pulled over. Limo tint ok for rear and rear-side, but not side/front makes little sense to me.

I live in Oakland County (MI) and I have 35% in the front, and 5% in the back. I pull up next to cops all the time, and I have never had any trouble. Friends of mine that went with 15% or 5% in the front have been pulled over several times before at like $75.00 a pop.

Many of you are saying things like, "I roll my windows down so the cop can see me." Yeah, we practice common sense, but the guy with Glock in his lap isn't thinking, "Hmm, maybe I should roll down my window so the cop can see me." It's like saying, "why put an alarm on that jewerly store, I'm never going to rob it." You won't, but someone will.

I would love to be able to tint my widows dark for looks and the fact that the car stays cooler and the dash has UV protection. But at the same time, I think the safety of an officer is more important than any of those things. Am I going to pull a gun a cop when he pulls me over? Absolutely not. But I still have to abide by the laws so the cops can see into my car

The law should be, If you have tint, I stop you, you don't roll down the window, you get a ticket.

If I stop you, you have tint, you roll down your windows, no harm no foul. Tint doesn't matter if the window is down at a traffic stop.

This is kind of like concealed carry laws where you have to notify the cops you are carrying a weapon. If you don't in some states, you are cited.

PA Crack down on tinting

Here in PA, they just started a major crack down on car glass tinting. They "armed" the troopers and officers with special meters.

Plus, if you get caught, you not only get a ticket, but you can't drive your car again until the tinting is removed. So, you either have your car towed away, or remove the tinting right there.

It was front page news here, and the paper included a pic of a guy having to scrape the tinting off this windows at the side of the road after being stopped. Note the officer standing in the left background making sure.

In PA and NY, and I am sure other states too, the tint limit for the front side windows is the same as for the windshield.

Are you sure about that? I'm not arguing with you, I just thought that the you cannot have ANYTHING below "the line" on the windsheild. If you look on the driver's side, you'll see a small line with some letters, I was told that was the limit. Basically, it means no tinting or lettering lower than 4 or 5 inches.

Just a small update on the tint situation--I have decided to not get it done. It's not worth possibly losing $160 by ending up getting pulled over and having to remove the tint.I'm taking my $160 and putting it towards something that is totally legal:STRIPES! :nice:

Jen I think stripes will look better. As for the tint I have heard rumors where I live that tint is for ugly chicks anyways. Just kidding.

You know you should be able to tint your car as dark as you want to. If you get pulled over and your windows arent rolled down and dome lights arent on the officer should then be authorized to blow your glass out with a shotgun so he can see what it is that they are hiding in there?? After thinking about it, it would be scary to walk up to a vehicle all tinted up. I know I wouldnt do it especially for what a cop makes it isnt worth it.
