Would doing a front coil over conversion on the front using stock strut mounts work? I would of course get new CC plates with better struts but for now just running them on the stock mounts and KYB struts.
Are you talking about the lower strut mounts? I think you are asking if they will work with the KYB struts you have. That is something you will have to ask the manufacturer of the coilover kit. They are design specific for a certain strut. MM makes a kit for Koni and Tokico, then another kit for Bilstein. I am very happy with the MM setup, very tight fit between the sleeve and the strut. What brand are you looking at? MM warned me about most of the other kits out there. They make the sleeve out of pipe, and it fits loosely on the struts. MM machines it from billet alum., its a nice fit. I wouldnt want that sleeve rattling around on there when I hit a bump. The cheaper kits are not much less $ anyway. Alot of the cost comes from the struts you use. Mine were almost $400 for the struts alone. Also, what spring rate are you looking at? I went with 250lb as MM suggested, but they are pretty stiff. I wish I had gone with 200lb springs. I dont care about handling at all.
I am one of the few who bought coilovers and raised my front up. Most are looking to lower it, I was looking for full adjustability in hopes of finding some traction.
If you're talking about the upper strut mount (i.e., c/c plate), you will need aftermarket ones. The stockers aren't meant to take the full weight of the car.
Yeah, I was talking about the top mount, not the spindle. No I wasn't considering those universal kits, more looking into the D&D kit which I heard was good, but keeping my eyes open. I know MM is the best, I have their Subframes, but they are pricy. I guess you get what you pay for to a point, and if your pushing the limits, that difference might be all the world, but for a street toy for a financially challenged individual like me which just wants to have fun, it might not be worth it.
I looked at the kits, and I looked at the Strut tower from under on my car. They don't look like they actually support the weight of the car on the mount, in fact no car does. Vehicles with McPherson struts (nonadjust coil overs really) never support the wieght there, and I don't belive it will make a difference from how the strut rod behaves stock.
I am doing coil overs for the adjustability. Regular springs may work fine on a stock car for which they were designed, but once you start sheding weight and transfering the rest of it, they won't be quite right.
With regular springs, not low enough, buy new springs or cut the current one's, went too low your buying more springs (which are a pita to install) and you can't uncut a spring. Meanwhile the guy across the street is sitting on a lawn chair drinking a beer with his car sitting all perfect laughing at you while you throw you money, springs, and fits!!!
The instructions that came with my D&D kit says "If you are running a stock plate, you will need to modify your stock onion bushing in order to mate the coil over to the bottom of the plate." It doesn't give any details past that. I bought QA1 steel C/C plates from Summit, I think they were abouot $150.

With coilovers, on the bottom of the CCs. If you remove the stock springs, you are now moving them to the struts with coilovers. Unbolt the stock strut plates and tell me how high your car is afterwards!

oh yeah, duh, I don't know what I was thinking. I mean when you change out mcpherson struts the whole thing, spring, strut, and mount come out as one... I was thinking of the strut rod, sorry.

Absolutely get the CC plates BEFORE you do the coilsovers. But, you have to get certain CC's... Most won't support a coilover suspension. You need ones that use a spherical bearing at the top, not a bushing. Go with the MM is my personal recommedation.
