so i was out banging the gears a little bit enjoying this nice cool weather when i noticed that in third gear the car started to sputter around 4 grand... I looked at the gas guage an was right around e so i stopped an filled up... took off an got on a back road an it started again!!! it doesnt do it in first or second, so im thinking its a load issue which would only cause it to do it in third an fourth?? does this sound like something a stock pump would do?? a friend thought of the fuel filter, but i replaced that a couple of months back... i found a vacuum leak today an fixed it, now after i reset the computer its surging can this be related?? im stumped an going to bed!!!

Sounds like a fuel volume issue. Vacuum leak would cause the car to run lean and be an issue. If you can get ahold of a fuel pressure gauge monitor pressure ramping through the gears. If it drops your most likly looking at a fuel pump. (since you just replaced your filter). When you hit WOT the fuel pressure should jump a little like around 5psi this is because there is no vacuum on the pressure regulator any more. (make sure this happens). I hope i was help. Good luck

a bad FPR can also be the cause of low fuel pressure.

check your spark plugs, might as well change them while your at it. I had a miss like 4 years ago that went away when i changed the spark plugs even though they looked good. actually, im gonna try that on my car tomorrow since i havent tried that yet since acquiring a miss recently.

I had the similar problem not too long ago... when was the last time you changed your distributer cap and rotor??, thats one of the cheapest and easiest things to check out first.

dumped the codes an got 91 is all... orignal 02's, so im thinkin thats what the code is for... no vacuum leaks yet, but we all now how those vacuum leaks can be... gonna put my vacuum guage on the car n see what its pulling... f.p. remains constant at 44 psi under w.o.t. checked via my autometer cowl mounted f.p. guage. Could it be blowing the spark out???

one could swap plugs, as was suggested above. might gap them a little tight and see what happens. alternative would be swapping the coil, etc.

good luck.

a friend of mine was running 24# inj and MAF with a slightly modded 5.0 WITH a stock fuel pump and 3-4 gears at a certain rpm car would lose power and start starving for fuel. He got the 255 in tank pump and no more problems...hope this helps.
