I am going to attempt to replace the fuel filter myself (novice mechanic), and I plan to incorporate the help of the Chilton manual and/or Haynes manuel. Is there anything I should be aware of before I do this or is this a pretty simple, straightfoward job to do? Thanks for any help for a novice.

You will need a set of A/C and Fuel Line quick disconnect rings--they are cheap and very useful. Just consult the manual and it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Oh, and be careful of the gas coming out of the filter.

yeah, go to autozone and pick up their ac/fuel line disconnect tools

How does one do that, Pro50? I have changed a few of these on various Ford vehicles and never bled anything. Didn't seem to bother me, other than the fuel in the filter.

Yeah, for novices out there, the schrader valve is on your fuel rail above your heads and it looks like a bicycle stem cap for the tire.

wait guys....he said fuel filter right?? thats right in front of the gas tank in back. why in the world would he need to disconnect fuel lines?? just get rid of the f/p (or wait like 2-3 hours), jack the car up, slide under the back and right in front of that big black casing for the tank there should a protector for the fuel filter. need to fiddle with it to get it open (cant remember exactly how its done cause its been about a year for me). make sure you put a rag up there when you get one side done cause you will laugh when you find out how much fuel is actually still in the filter.
am i thinking of something else cause ive never heard of having to use fuel or a/c disconnectors to do this job

You don't need a fuel line disconnect tool for the fuel filter. Just unplug the fuel switch in the trunk, crank the car a few times to lower fuel pressure. Jack up rear end of car, pop off the plastic clips for fuel line. Put a rag around the fuel line, maybe havfe a small bucket ready for excess fuel. Pull each end of fuel line carefully and PAY ATTENTION TO WHICH WAY THE FILTER IS FACING! Replace filter, and reverse the steps. Viola!

WMDPALMER, once i plug the fuel switch back then my car should start up fine again, right? I just want to make sure that does not do any damage to my car, I am pretty sure it doesnt otherwise you would not be advising me to do it and you would not do it yourself. I ask because I want to make sure I take all the safety precautions when dealing with the fuel system.

it's easy enough to do, but no matter what, you will get gas on you... about a qt in the filter too remember... I used vice grips for the tubing, and that was pretty much it... Napa for my filter... took about an hour all said and done... good luck

I wouldn't tell you to do something that I wouldn't do my self. I am actually following instructions from a Chilton/Haynes manual. Thats how it read to do it. I have done this to my last stang and current one. Both times worked great!
