alright i got a 89 LX 5.0 with a stock motor. it had 157000 miles before the spedometer quit working (previous owner did it, probly close to 200k now) but it runs good no smoking or leaks or anything. i replaced all fluids and have seen alot of fuel injector cleaners that you add to gas tank. i however heard that these could mess up your engine, is this true? what does anybody know about them? if they are good what brand do you think is best?

I don't know about those additives, they do help, but they are by far not the best. I work in a shop, we run this stuff called 44K made by BG, seems to help but we also run chemicals throught the intake and this cleans that out, heads, and top of the cylinders. There is also a way to run it directly throught the fuel lines and is really suposed to work. Might try this on mine if were slow tomorow.

Did you replace the fuel filter recently???

the best way to clean injectors is to pull and take them in for a cleaning. JRichker has posted some interesting info on that stuff (with links).

i run the tank stuff too - though i dont hold my breath. i like the idea of the ones that: are connected to the schrader valve - FP relay is disconnected. the motor runs off the contents of the can. that seems like it might be a decent middle ground of the two alternatives i listed.

if you pull injectors, new o-rings and pintle caps are a good idea. then again, for all that money, new injectors might be a better decision.

my two cents. good luck.

Good suggestions JT, I would do that, remove the injectors and make sure there is not buildup on the tips. Maby some throttle cleaner or brake clean throught the fuel rails would be a good idea. Sounds like a cheaper alternative. He's almost stock, I don't think it's injector replacment time.

yeah Jason, we are on the same page (sorry to have been redundant with what you said in your first post - i type slow and you posted first). :)

the only reason i suggested the replacement injectors was that if he R/R'd his, had them cleaned and bought o-rings and pintle cap kits, he would be a ways towards some fresh ones (thinking that with 200K miles on them, they might have seen better days). i agree, mod wise there is no need at all for upgrading on a flow need.

For the remove, test & clean option, see http://www.cleaninjectors.com/

Fuel injector seal kits with 2 O rings and a pintle cap (Borg-Warner P/N 274081) are available at Pep Boys auto parts. Cost is about $2.74 per kit. The pintle caps fit either injectors with a pin sticking out the injector end or 4 with more tiny holes in the injector end. The following are listed at the Borg-Warner site ( http://www.borg-warner.com ) as being resellers of Borg-Warner parts:

http://www.partsplus.com/ or http://www.autovalue.com/ or http://www.pepboys.com/ or http://www.federatedautoparts.com/

Most of the links above have store locators for find a store in your area.

Use a little motor oil on the O rings when you re-install the fuel injectors. It makes them slide smoothly into place.

There are a few auto parts stores out there that have this machine as well. Check you local NAPA stores etc. and see if it can be done locally. Turn around time should be roughly 20 min.
Daggar, do you know a ballpark idea of the cost to have such a service done locally? im just curious. thanks. :)
