i have a 1988 mustang 5.0. ok when i turn the key to the on position my fuel pump turns on but will not turn off untill i turn the key off. when i get my stang started it idles like poop and is misfiring?? is there a relay that is suppose to control the pump or..........idk........plz give me an idea for what to do?

Check to see if the signal wire from the ECU is at fault first. If it shuts off but the pump keeps running, it could have a short. The relay grounds the fuel pump which makes it work, if it has a short it will run it when it's not suposed to. The problem could also be in your distrubuter/module but check to see if it's the relay first.

Jason, what you typed sounds misleading to me. The pump is supplied with 12 volts (it has constant ground at the pump). the computer does send ground to the FP relay, which is what i know you meant. and you are right - if for instance that ground wire from the puter to the FP relay has a short, the pump will stay energized any time the key is on. also if someone tested the pump by using the self-test connector, it would be the same difference.

like i said, i know you know this, but when i read your reply, it read a little funny (to me).

even if your pump ran countious KOEO it shouldnt have any affect on idle. Since the pump is always running when the car is on. The pressure regulator does all the work. Looks like you may have 2 seperate issues.
