Fuel Pump help

I started to swap out pumps today that turned out to be a huge pain in my butt. Any who I just test drove the car and now it's breaking up pretty bad past 4g's. I looked at the diagram(sp?) that was sent with the pump and noticed it had a line that looked to be pluged. There are two lines actually on the assembly that has one pluged and the other unplugged (return line). I don't remember pluging the other line, could this cause my car to break up pretty bad???

I would like to help Danny but it has been so long since I did that stuff to mine I just don't remember any of the details.

A hose that is plugged sounds strange to me however.

I don't remember any of that, lol.

Grady at least you tried :nice:
On the assembly itself it has 3 open metal lines. One uses the S hose that goes to the pump itself. The second one has no lentgh to it at all I believe it is the return line. The third line is near the pumps power source (on top of the pump) when installed that one I'm almost 100% needed to be pluged. I found an orange vacumm plug near the car were I was working. It matches the same one (style wise) in the picture that came with the new pump. I think it's called the pick line??? I doubt it's supposed to suck air like it's doing right now.

i will go out later today (cause it's 6 am here) and dig myold pump assy out, i have a good idea what your talking about with plugging the lines. the holley i bought was already done i pulled my old one out and put the new one in ! I'm kinda lost on the 3 metal line stuff tho? peace

Thanks for trying man I'm pretty much done with it I'm all out of ideas. I'm just going to get one of my Ford buddys here to help out or just pay him. I just don't have the time to keep dropping it/jacking it up then messing with it (stupid job). I'm going to give it another try tomorrow after noon when I get off of work. If any one has any ideas feel free...

Move to Clearwater, then you can bribe Chad to do it with Whoppers :nice:

Danny, It sounds like your return line is capped. SO you are running off raw pump (no regulation).........

I just looked in the manual and see only the two lines. It does not show the lower line in your pic in my pic.......

Not that this helps. So do you have two complete lines connected with no plugs? The 3rd (lower) line might be a continuation of one hose and we dont even deal with it normally...........

I do think your return might be plugged.

Good luck bud.

Okay new info (thanks to marius of corral) that orange plug is not a plug at all. It's a rubber baffle that "relys on a certain amount of fuel return so that the gas being run through the pump will help keep it cool. By plugging that line you will just build up fuel pressure and burn your pump up". That explains the 60+psi's at idle with vac on, and when I left it with out the plug the lack of power in the upper rpm's.

Bingo that (what I thought was a plug) is a rubber type of baffle :bang: . So now I have to wait until Monday to hit up Ford for the peice and hopefully the rubber baffle is sold seperatly and I don't have to buy the whole unit. I thought the other line in the pic was the return line not the one I was plugging.

JT the Hanes manuel has an almost exact pic of the one I posted...1st line is the return line, and right across from it is the other line (has no lenght), and the third the pump gets hooked up too.

Danny, nice work. I will look in Haynes and see what they show (I was lookin in the factory manual).

It has to feel good to have figured it out! :nice:

Real good and a huge thanks to marius of corral.net for knowing that little rubber peice is a baffle and not a plug like I assumed it was. I'm just hoping one of the Ford techs has a fuel unit laying around with the orange baffle still attached. If not I may be forced to buy the entire unit (minus the pump) to fix mistake.

Okay cleared codes a few days ago to see what else was causig the poor performance. Ran codes today and 113 popped up ACT/IAT/VAT circuit above max voltage -40 F indicated. So I went ahead and ordered an ACT sensor from Ford. Since it helps control fuel ratios and timing curves it explains the "popping" in the exhaust ocasionally(sp?) and poor pwoer in the upper rpms. Hopefully this will clear up al my problems.
