fuel pump questions

ok i helped a buddy convert his 6cyl to a carbed302.....the problem were haveing is with supplying fuel.....the car will run for a while with an aftermarket fuel pump then shut off....i was wondering if it is possible to suck through the stock fuelpump or not?

What year 6 cylinder was it, the early-mid 80's or the 94' and up? What was the old foundation, efi or carb?
