Trying to get my fuel pump out of the gas tank, but the fuel pump housing is not under the gas tank hole and I can’t get the thing out of the tank. Hoping someone has some ideas how much force I can put against the holder that‘s attached to the bottom of the tank.

Pretty sure you have to drop the tank to get to the fuel pump and sending unit, at least that is what I had to do when I changed mine. It is a pain. I would think it would be tough to gain enough clearance to remove the unit if the tank is still hanging on the straps and various lines.

There are several pump replacement videos on YouTube. Some pumps easily go straight up and out of the tank. Some show the pump is not square below the tank hole and show how tough it is to remove. Thanks for sharing.

What year and model is the car? The pump style changes mid-1998, so for a more detailed answer really need to know if this is a 96-98 with the return style fuel system, or a 99-04 with the returnless style.

Would also help to know what the "tank hole" is that you are referring to. There are a few holes in the tank

It’s an ‘02; GT. Story about that.... The tank hole is the hole on top of the tank where you install/remove the fuel pump. Thanks for any advice.

Well once the tank is lowered enough to get your hands in there, you can use a little force and wiggling to get it out. Take your time with it.

Can you define ‘a little force.’ How flexible is the housing that’s attached to the tank bottom?

Its not flexible, but I had to move it in all kinds of directions to get it out. Just did it a few weeks ago. I was a little surprised at all the work to get it out
