Alright so I had some trouble with my new fuel pump I just installed yesterday. I put it in but the pump wouldn't prime and the car would crank but wouldn't start. I dropped the tank again today to see if the pump was good. When I got the pump out I hooked it up to a battery and it worked fine. One of the wires was loose though so I thought that was the culprit. So I rewired everything hooked it up left the tank down and tried to prime it. It still didn't prime, but I didn't try to start it. I took off the red connector and jumped the pump again real quick to make sure the wires were still hooked up tight and I was able to jump the pump from the top of the tank. I tried to use the eec tester to try and jump the pump but it didnt work. I also tried switching my a/c and f/p relays but still wouldn't prime. So I checked if I had fuel pressure with the key on and I did, I couldn't tell how much but a nice stream squirted out when I depressed the schreader valve. So I said screw it, turned the key on no prime, turned the motor over, and then engine started running?? It ran real rough and the check engine light came on but I think that was due to not having the fuel filler neck in the tank.
Sorry for making that so long but my question is, is that possible? For the fuel pump to not prime but for the car to run? Am I risking anything If I put the tank back up and run the car like that?
It probably won't run long before it quits again. Use a tire pressure guage as an emergency substitute for a fuel pressure gauge. Go back to your original fuel pump post and work your way through the checklist. Examine the FP socket for corrosion and damaged wiring.
Joe, I left the car running for about 2 minutes and it idled high at like 1k rpm and had the check engine light on, again I think due to not having the filler neck on, but it ran solid.
Relieved fuel pressure, unplugged the line from tank to the fuel filter that goes to the engine. I put the inertia switch back in and cranked the motor over, obviously didnt start, but it shot fuel everywhere out of the assembly. So it looks like its pumping fuel, its just not priming, and I cannot hear it pumping even through the open filler neck. Whats up with this? Did I get the top secret silent priming and pumping pump or is there something wrong with this pump?
