Fuel smell w/ headaches!

Have a 91 LX 5.0, Gt 40 intake, underdrive, pulleys, Ford Motor Ceramic Shorty Headers,2.5" exhaust, X-pipe, flowmasters, 190LPH fuel pump, rockers(because of the taller valve covers I assume) , I think upgraded fuel injectors (because theyre so LOUD) E303 cam, 73mm Vortech throttle body or is it the mass airflow?K&N, Steeda springs, subframe connectors, 3.55's Oh well - anyway- Trying to solve two problems and I think they may be related. I'm not sure on some things on the car because I just bought it - Others I know cause I have the Steeda Invoices of what was done (and some of their codes I can't decipher)

Ok - first One - idle is set to about 800-900 rpm It idles fine - however when I'm driving, it seems I can let my foot off the gas and "idle" at cruise speed; and when I stop at a light - the Idle hangs at about 1500 rpm and gradually (SLOWLY drops) to about 1100, and then if the light is long enough, it will all of a sudden DROP back to the normal 800/900 Idle it's set to. Cruise control works fine... um Throttle body spring SNAPS back when I do it with my hand... Is this a vacuum issue? or something Inside the throttle body housing?? any suggestions would help -

Also 2nd issue I have - it seems that gasoline smell permeates through the firewall - My wife and I have noticed it and its given me headaches before.. I dont SEE any evidences of fuel being spilled anywhere or anything tangible - however the injectors DO seem unusually loud...??also noticed that the smog pump i removed from serpentine system, and it seems the EGR is plugged up as best it can be - this was my initial suspision. Should I remove the pipe that extends from off the back of the heads and intall plugs back there? and the 190LPH fuel pump is it necessary on this particular setup? does this effect fuel economy or just fuel line pressure or potential fuel delivery?

So many questions - sorry to ramble - any help is appreciated.. THanks!

put a return spring on the throttle body to pull the throttle back, that is bad that it sticks. your o rings on the injectors could be bad, you are not supposed to hear injectors, get those checked

Most EFI systems tend to hang idle a little. Mine does it until I come to a complete stop. Just as long as it doesn't surge, that sucks. You might want to try cleaning out the IAC, they tend to get buildup inside, along with the TB. The TB sticking, what about when the engine isn't running? If it does it when the engine isn't running check for carbon buildup in the TB. I have also heard of accelerator cables being stuck or sticky and causing these problems. Once when I R&R'd my intake, I roughted the throttle cable wrong and it made the pedal act up, make sure yours is roughted straight and not binding all over other harnesses/wires/tubes. If it only does this when the engine is running, I have heard drilling a small hole in the larger side of the butterfly helps this by reducing the vaccume load on that side of the butterfly.

It's probally not the injectors, but the rockers making noise. I have RR's which are adjusted right, but still make some noise. The fuel smells, I had this problem not too long ago. Check for any place under the car exaust gasses could come into the interior. Hey, you could have a small header leak, which would explain the ticking and exaust could be going into the vents in the cowl giving you fuel smells. The smog pump tubes should be removed and plugged in the back of the heads, definaly cleans up the compartment.

When did not being able to hear injectors firing come around?? You can always hear them its normal..

I see you have a x-pipe.. Does it have cats?? Mine doesn't and i once in a while get some fuel smells inside the car cuz of it..

injectors making noise= they work.

check the carbon cannister and its connections (pass front end under air box).

hanging idle, you are on the right track. vac leak can do it. look for 12-20 inches of vac.
another cause of hanging idle can be: the puter tries to 'zero' out the idle each time. so if one messes with the set screw, it puter tries to lower the idle back down. end result can be a hanging idle, since you are messing with the computer's "head."

good luck.

some injectors are noisier than others (different between brands). if you dont hear it with a naked ear, if you put a mechanic's stethoscope or screwdriver on one, you will hear it click. that means it is working (it does not say how it is spraying, but tells you it is working, as a noid light would).

generally, yes, one does not hear the injectors pulse with a naked ear while the motor is running. but some injectors are louder than others.

Justin - no cats - although I wont rule out the possibility that the exhaust COULD be leaking somewhere, It's just not obvious - The FRPP Ceramic headers have those trick locking tabs on the studs so they dont back out or come loose - And I'm SURE the injectors are extremely loud - The little screwdriver to the ear trick just about confirms this. Do the higher ratio rockers produce more noise?

also something wierd - my new mustang smells EXACTLY like my previous 93 mustang 5.0 coupe that I had to sell 3 yrs ago - that had EGR stuff removed - could it be that the interiors are preserved with the permeating fuel smell? It just struck me as odd.

Anyone know where to get the EGR plugs for the back of the heads?

THANKS all for taking time to reply!

to plug the egr ports on the back of the heads, just find bolts that a very close to the size need, an gob the hell outta them with some high temp rtv an shove em in there...
i did this to mine, an its been fine for awhile now....

prob need to check the lines on the charcoal canaster maybe they are cracked i allways have a fuel smell in my car but what hot rod doesnt?
is there an echo in here. LOL J/K

that was my first thought.

i did not re-read all of this, but if one is goin to plug up EGR, be wary of part throttle detonation, which happens to some after ditching it. getting a chip burned is the solution if this causes detonation.....
good luck
