Fuel wont go in when pumping gas?

on my 89 GT when i try puting gas in it the first time i try the gas will not go in and it runs down the overflow tube to the ground. then when i try a second time it goes in fine? whats the deal? seems as though iv heard of this problum before with other peoples cars?

I just experienced this BS with a brand new fuel pump at the old gas station. I had to ease into it at first and then I kept squeezing the trigger until fuel was flowing full bore.

I only say this in case you want to try a different station and see if it fuels up normally.

I have to fuel my car by hand or it will overflow on the "automatic" settings on the handle. I don't know why the eff it does that, I figure a small neck going down to the fuel tank?

iv never had this problum with my 91?

1991 LX, never had the problem, But, thanks for a "different" topic from the usual "what headers?, what fan?, surging idle?!!!!!!

try angling the nozzle to the side a little. Mine would do it every now and the so i would angle the nozzle a bit differently and it would work fine..

I have to be careful when filling mine as it will overflow before the handle clicks off, I try to listen for it as the sound changes as it nears full.

isnt there something in the filler neck that keeps people from syphoning gas?
