Has anyone ever made the stock hood scoop on an 01 - 04 mustang gt funtional?? I have been thinking about this for quite some time now and really want to do it buy have not been able to find any info....So since you are all mustang guys i thought i would come and ask you....Have you ever seen one made functional?? If anyone has info or even pics that would be great.
Thanks,
Jeff

That would be interesting, but why? What would its functions be? All that water would be flowing into your engine compartment. Hmmm. It would be easy to cut a hole in the underside of the hood, and remove the honeycomb. The scoop is just taped on. This sounds like a mecahnical engineer's challenge. Is there a BSME in the house?

BSME here, and no it's not worth the time and effort to make it functional. The honeycomb part of the scoop is acutally a structural member of the scoop.

Not only that, even if you drill out the holes in the honeycomb, you run the risk of air rushing in underneath the scoop and ripping it completely off the hood. You would need to seal between the scoop and the hood itself, and basically cut the entire area of the hood underneath the scoop to allow the incoming volume of air to properly channel underneath the hood.

I won't even begin to discuss water and debris that can make this a nightmare!

do a search.... most people end up with rusty sparkplug wells

I've heard of one non-sob story

if you want a functional scoop drop a grand on the CDC or Karkraft kit, or the Banshee kit if they still make it.

This topic has come up numurous times in the past, and its always the same answer. If you drill holes in the scoop AND cut the underside of the hood....it WILL fly off. I recall someone doing this and it flew off at like 110MPH. On top of that before he made the speed run, his engine was getting very dirty if im not mistaken.

Buy another hood, or live with the fakeness

If you take the honeycomb thingy out it will fly off the hood (or buckle in half) lol. i've known someone to do that.... :notnice:

however, i guess if there's a hole in your hood under the scoop, might lower the chance of it flying off or breaking the scoop.
but yes, with nothing under it to catch water, bugs, etc... if it's raining pretty hard out, it wouldn't be good to have that much water going on a hot engine IMO....

honestly i couldn't stand the scoop, it was just a water trap to me after washing it. i couldn't wait to get rid of it :D does look good with it though. (but good w/o it too)

thats why I bought a shaker

KarKraft used to make the functional scoop kit, now they just sell the shaker.

I didn't want any honeycomb or fake scoops on my car, thus it's current style mods.

Who needs a hood? Especially when you have such a cool roof ornament.

What's really funny....he called his car Detroit Stylez.....said it needs a new ragtop (probably should not have stood on it)....new bombass stereo.....but never mentions on his page about buying a hood.

I did the functional hood scoop on my ride......It works great providing it ain't raining! I installed a 1 inch piece of lexan between the middle of scoop to the hood where the honycomb holes used to be! I does keep engine temps down while on the freeway but if it rains and your COP boots don't seal well you can get moisture on your plugs........I wash my engine quite frequently so I change the plugs out with every oil change........even without the functional scoop the COP's still get moisture in them from time to time! I did it at first and the middle bows if you don't put a support piece in the middle........I have a picture I will post up when I get home..........as far as performance it really doesn't do anything for you but I have noticed that my highway temps went down with 410's...........

Hah! I saw a green mustang with a scoop that looked like it bent downwards in the middle. Didn't look too close, figured it was a V6 with an ugly aftermarket scoop. I guess this is what happened. Weird.

my best friend put a strut tower brace off of a civic onto his ford probe, it bent in half like that.. he got made fun of so much he left the hood off of it .. BUT!, KEPT THE BRACE! lol...
