Fusable link Question PLEASE HELP

Hey guys Im upgrading and replacing some old wire with new ones, my question is the fusable link that comes off the selonoid its has a yellow wire, the wires are all rusted and crap, i cut off the fusable link and im wondering what i should use in place of it, should i forget about it and just connect the wires together, put a fuse in the link and if so what size, do they sell fusable wire like whats used?

Replace it with a fuse that is capable of handling the maximum current output of your alternator or the maximum amount of current that sized power wire is able to handle... whichever is lowest.

i have a 200amp alt so should i get a 200 amp fuse?

Yes... you can usually get fusible link wire from better stereo shops however.... PA-Performance has a 200 amp fuse and holder here:

Now that 200 amp fuse and holder is for the MAIN power wire coming from the alternator. This is NOT for the 14 or 18 guage fusible link. 14 and 18 guage wire is not desigend to carry 200 amps so protecting a wire that small with a 200 amp fuse is worthless. If the wire you're talking about is the same 14 or 18 guage wire that I'm talking about, then you need to replace it with an equivalent fusible link or a smaller fuse that will keep that wire from lighting itself on fire if it's ability to carry current is exceeded.

The maximum current capacity of a 14 guage wire is 32 amps and 16 guage wire is 19 amps (for chasis wiring). The fuses for wires of that size should closely correspond with those load limits.

So let me ask you somthing if my alt puts out 200 amps and that wire puts out 35amps wont the fuse blow or no.

The fuse links are rated for the amperage they are supposed to carry, and that they are supposed to open up at. It should be on a wiring diagram also. I think they are marked with the size and or, color coded by size.

I would use that size fuse.

Just becuase your alternator is capable of producing 200 amps, doesn't mean that your car and it's accessories are PULLING 200 amps and every wire in your car is certainly not pulling 200 amps.

200 amps is allota juice. I do hope that you updated your main power harness (wire) when you installed that alternator. The stock wiring is not up to the task of handling accessories such as an electric cooling fan through the stock wiring.
