Fuse Block problem?

Hi all. I seem to be having a problem with my fuse block. Basically my radio stopped working and so I checked the fuse for it, but it was fine. I can swap in any fuse and it still doesn't work. It will cause the cd mechanism in the radio to activate for a second or so as i put a new one in, but then the radio won't turn on. I believe it has something to do with the contacts on the fuse box for that specific fuse slot. I could be wrong, but what is a good way to go about checking this out. I was thinking about ordering a new fuse box, but the place I usually shop at, www.calmustang.com doesn't carry them that I could find.

Also, I was having this problem last summer for like a day. The thing is I just played with it by constantly removing the fuse and putting it back in unable to find out what was wrong. Then suddenly it worked and was fine for a long time until the problem has returned now.

have you bothered to check the power wires or the ground running to the radio?

It does sound like a problem with the radio wiring but I guess if you removed the fuse and hooked a voltmeter to both sides of the fuse holder , you should get around twelve volts? Others?

Well, the funny thing is that the radio is capable of ejecting cds and taking them in. It just doesn't turn on. I'll check the fuse block connectors with voltmeter today like dave says.

About checking the ground and power wires. Do you mean checking their connections or testing with voltmeter?

i mean actually ripping out the wires from the connectors and putting on new ones, checking to make sure the ground is connected pretty well, checking the remote wire etc....just to make sure theyre all hooked up and ready to go.....check the antenna wire, make sure thats hooked up......etc...and if all else fails hit it up with computer cleaner or something. In dash cd players are so tempermental when dust or something of that sort hits em it aint even funny. And if you have an amp check the in/out ports to make sure theyre screwed on, hell even check to make sure the amp is getting power.....just do a thourough inspection and check and retighten everything.....then well see what's happening

Well I just checked all the connections and they seem good to me. I checked the ground and power wires to make sure they were nice and tight too. I used the voltmeter on the slot in the fuse block to make sure all was well there. I'm really at a loss on this one. i'd hate to think it was the actual face of the stereo that was not working. It has one of those detachable faces. The reason why I think this is because the light that blinks (sort of like an anti theft light) blinks normally right now and as I said the cd ejects just fine. Its just that the radio itself does not power on.

Have you got two feeds to your head unit? One permanent that stops the memory from erasing every time you turn off, and the one from an ACC feed so that it turns off when you remove the ignition key?

A long shot, but it may be that the ACC feed has failed so you only get the 'standby' features of the unit (thinking as I'm typing - the LED should still flash though...)

If that's not it, I think your head unit is knackered. Take it to a car audio dealer and let them check it out.

Yes it does have the two feeds to my head unit. That makes sense about the ACC feed failing. The wiring might be bad there. I'm going to take it to a stereo shop anyway because they have to fix the alarm they installed for me. Hopefully they can look at the stereo and see what it is. I'm not very good with electrical problems.

I was wondering if anyone would mention this. good call limey, thats probably the culprit. i installed car audio for a long time, and thats what i would have first guessed. if not, check for shorts at the fuse block, wiring etc. but im about 98% sure this is the problem

Will do limey. I haven't had much time lately because of work and school, but I'll get to it soon. My car is otherwise in good shape so its only of moderate priority at the time. I am missing the music though .
