After I fill the tank, my gas gauge goes way up beyond the border of the gauge. (Needle is barely visible.)

It sort of settles down (though not accurate) when the tank becomes less than half full.

I've had similar issues with my other cars, but this one is the worst. I never bothered fixing the other ones and just used the trip odometer as a back up to gauge how much fuel was left.

It's kinda bugging me now though and am wondering what the easiest way to fix it is--Before I consult my shop manual, anyone here know the fix? Is it just a sending unit that needs replacing?

Most likely your sending unit is causing this issue. You have to drop the tank to fix or replace it.

Damn. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. That's gonna have to wait.

my guage didn't work at all - dropped the tank to put a pump in and found the wiper arm on the fuel float was not in contact with the resitor board so I bent the arm to make good contact. Works just like yours does now and I know when the miles gets to 225-250 it's time for a fillup. The guage works fine though - the last half drops much quicker and the low fuel level light works too.
