gas guage problem

This a fairly common problem on fox bodies. Me and alot of other guys just reset the trip odometer each time we fill up and keep up with it that way.

From what I have been told the condition where the gauge stays stuck on full is caused by a "slosh sensor" on the back of the gauge cluster. It was originaly there to stop the needle on the fuel gauge from bouncing all over the place as you go around corners and up and down hills. But as they get old they malfunction and you are left with a gauge stuck on full. Actually out of all of the foxes I have been in or driven only my '93 4 banger has a working fuel gauge.

Anyhow, do you know where this sensor is or if its easy to replace? I'm planning on dropping the tank to change a pump this winter anyhow. If its easy to get at (and relatively cheap) I'd try swapping in a new one.

Well the sensor is behind the dash cluster not in the tank. I am not sure if Ford even still sells them. Might have to hit a J/Y for one.

Yeah...my gauge is AWFUL! I just want to have a working gauge of some sort...b/c yes, although I can keep track of the trip meter, driving habits change the mileage a lot...
Anyway...if someone has GOOD input with answers, please post. It seems like we all have similar problems without a good answer (short of that sensor which may or may not be available).

if you detach the sensor it will still read full, so it wont help. I got one from the junkyard and it worked fine. in my case it always read empty. 
I believe this is the small circuit board on th back of the cluster... about 2"x2"?
It also has a circuit in it to regulate voltage to other gages if it is the one I am thinking of. I have replaced this when my temp gage and oil gage read wacky. Ford sells (or did) them, they are (or were) about $20. Sure fixed my high temp gage and low oil pressure gage, but never have had problem with the fuel gage, so I dont know if this is the same part.
My temp would read 1/4 up dwhen it was dead cold, and my oil pressure would never come up off the bottom of the gage, even though I tested it witha mech. gage and had good pressure.

Ya, well i figure the money that involves fixing this stupid thing, its not even close to considering fixing it. I'll just keep watching my trip meter..
