gas mileage

ok the other day my stang was on E so i go to the gas station and put 6.5 gallons in it which makes the needle go to half a tank. Today I drove it 65 miles, driving so-so, not super hard but not putt putting. About what gas mileage do you think I am getting and is that good???

Its hard to say. Why don't you fill up compeletly, record the milage, then record how much it takes to fill it up all the way? Anyway, my guess would be between 10-15mpg from what you said. If thats true its not that good, but fairly common.

Roughly, if your tank is reading correctly and you have the standard 16 gallon tank for a 65/66.

1/2 = 8 gallons
1/8 = 2 gallons

You used 6 gallons to go 65 miles. That's about 10 mpg.

well i know I only put in 6.5 to take it from E to 1/2, and now its at 1/8th, so Im guessing I used about 4 gallons, and its a standard 67 tank, my sn for a 65 is my last car.

The only real way to do it is as wolf hints to. Fill the tank completely, record the mileage (or in newer cars reset the trip odometer) drive for at least 1/4 of a tank, preferably a 1/2, then fill it back up and note how many gallons it takes. Divide the mileage driven by the amont of gallons in the refill and that's your MPG. Anything else is purely speculation since the gauges are not that accurate. Other wise you have no idea what was there before the 6.5 gallons went in and what exactly is left when reading 1/8th. You'll be lucky to do better than 12 in a classic stock 8cyl depending on how much highway time you see.

well in my 65 stock 289 with a holley gas NEVER went near as quick as this one goes. I was hoping for 17 outta it, wonder what I can do to bump it up.

My 66 coupe used to get 24mpg highway and about 18-20 overall combo driving if I kept my foot out of it so I wonder what everyone does to get such low mileage. BTW, it was a 289 with aftermarket intake/holley carb, dual point distributor, and tri-ys with 2" out the back duals.

see i know with my 65 289 stock I got like 18+ cuz I could drive near 300 miles on a tank.

well i figured out where my gas mileage goes. I did the driveshaft turns to 1 tire turn and came out with 4.11!!! but only thing im confused about now, is it wont spin the tires. But I counted twice to make sure I did it right and came out to a lil over 4 everytime.

why not just get a AOD or a 5/6 speed? That way you can keep your 4.11 but still get good gas mileage.

4.11's and you get 10 mpgs? I have a 3.25 limited slip and get 7 mpgs! (Disclaimer: Lead foot problem)

Do what pakrat said, you arnt going to get any kind of accurate measurment if you dont, its not like the gauges are that perfect both of my parents new cars have gauges that aren't supper acurate, let alone a classic mustang that is known to have consistent gas gauge problems. Does your rear end click loud alot when you are turning if not it its probably not a locker?
