good morning and hello..
I just got rid of my 87gt and bought an 88gt.
before i bought the car, the gas gage was not working and the light was on all the time. i asked the guy who sold me the car to fix it before i bought it. he called me back saying that the cluster had shorted out and he was going to replace the cluster, the whole thing. when i picked up the car the cluster does work now, but only stays up to half a tank even if it is full. but my main concern is that there is some type of gas smell, specially if i fill up the car, even if i let the gas go down, you can smell gas fumes..
i checked under the car for gas spill and nothing, everything is dried and seems ok...
any ideas what i should be checking for ?
all your help is always highly appreciated.

thanks
Peligroso

follow every gas line, from the tank to the motor. if a line is old and cracking, it may be venting fumes into the cabin.
have you looked for the source of the smell with the car running? it may help pinpoint the problem.

Also check to see if one or more of the injectors is leaking. They usually leak from the O rings either at the fuel rail or at the intake.

Jack the front of the car up. Look at the filler neck to the tank. If you see gas leaking out thats the cause. You can get a new O-ring seal from ford. Common cause of gas smell.

yea i have the same problem....it WAS the filler neck, but my mechanic said that ford discontinued to make those.....i'm trying to get a new one without going to the junkyard...any ideas? and as far as the gas guage not going up all the way....that might be caused by the sender unit....

On your passenger side their is a hose that connects to your black canister check that hose if not follow it all the way to the back of the car.
