Gas....

you can run reg but mine always ran like crap on 87 octane. Even before my timming was bumped or before the blower I started to run 93 octane b/c the car ran so much better on it. If you can afford it run the more expensive stuff, if not just fill up w/ it every once in awhile, your car will thank you for it :nice:

I always hear of people geting 93 octane at the pump. Where do you guys live? Here in California, 91 octane is premium and my stang runs so much better on the good stuff. I have also gotten my best mpg on premium. And now that I gave my timing a slight bump, premium is a must. The difference between premium and regular is only about an extra 2 bucks a fill up, which is less than ten bucks a month extra. Just put the good stuff in. Your car will thank you.

I run 89 when not on the bottle.... and 91 or 93 when I am juicing. 93 isn't easy to find here either. Only a few stations have it.

I just bumped the timing back to 10* and am going back to the 75 shot. Trying to save a few bucks for more mods and to pay bills.

Here in STL. there are a few stations that sell like 100 or so octain(it may be 98 though) but they are hard to find and you have to fill it into a gas can you cannot put it directly into the car. Speed shops sell all the good stuff from leaded to unleaded race gas. sunnoco-to-turbo blue........smells so good......

I don't know about other states, but right now in Az we're running our winter mixtures which add 10% ethanol. This raises the octane, without "raising the octane" so to speak. So, now the 89 I normally run to avoid pinging issues is now more like 91. :) So now I can bump the timing and enjoy for free, or run 87, save some money and retain my regular performance.
You guys should see if your states/counties do this...just a tip for fellow stangers.

i dont know about you guys but my 95 cobra owners manuel says to run 87. Seeing as all of our cars cobra or GT came with the same compression stock, i belive thats what everyone should be running . I currently run 89 tho just because i dont want to risk it pinging...heh stock compression is 9.0:1 , that is low and we dont need to use high octane on our mildly stock motors :) , I dont care what you say!

Since you guys never switch (summer sucks here cause not only is it 110* but the gas gets MTBE) you might be getting a lower octane w/the ethanol. For example they add it to your 89 and Sell it as 91, ect. If not, you've got it pretty good there.

tell me about it (Tucson here). i run 15* in winter (under 90* ambient temps or so) and 10* in 110*.

The lower the octane you run, the better performance you will get. PERIOD

The ONLY reason you should run anything higher than 87 octane is if you... 1. Have a power adder (SC, Turbo, N20). 2. Have a high compression motor (over 10:1 , which neither the GT's or the cobra's have)

If you have detonation with 87 octane, you need to tune your car up. If you bump the timing, and you have to run 91 octane to remove detonation, then you are not gaining any power (add timing = +hp, but add octane = -hp, so it balances itself out).

the higher the octane, the lower the volatility. so it takes longer to burn. if one has artificially high compression (deposits, etc), hot spots, etc, the car can experience detonation (or preignition from carbon).

higher octane when not necessary is detrimental. however if someone is pinging, cleaning chambers, backing timing down or running higher octane are ways to help it out.

this goes along with what Scott said. (going a bit more into the relationship between advancing timing vs using slower burning fuel).

I think it has to do with all the excess corn here in the midwest :D , I know the comp. are checked to make sure the rating is what the actual octane is so I dont know about the 89 as 91 thing. As far as MTBE well I noticed its in some of those octane boosters :rlaugh: :nonono: from what I have heard it sucks. I had a printout of how to make homemade race gas by adding things got preaty freaky.

Yes higher octane is not always good. You should run the octane your car needs. octane is the ability of the fuel to not burn or pre-ignite. Its heat tollerance (you can put a lit cigarette out in a gallon of open pump gas). You should always run the lowest octane you can without getting det. N/A.
