hello i was wondering if anyone has some step by step instructions on installing a gear drive on an 89 5.0. i have never done it before and i need to know everything on what to do about installing it. any help would be great. thanks.

Are you talking about timing gears? If so I don't think they can be installed on a computer controlled vehicle. I think the knock sensor won't like it or something like that.

yes they are new timing gears

ive talked to some people about it and no one said anything about them not working on a computer controlled vehicle

If you look in the Summit catalog you'll notice that there is a warning about running timing gears on cars equipped with knock sensors. If you have a set of gears that causes an issue then your computer will continually retard timing, thinking that you're detonating the fuel mixture.

is there anyone that is POSITIVE that the 302 has a knock sensor?

no knock sensor on a 97-93 302, that i know

Just make sure you are running gears designed for use with hydraulic roller setups.

basically, you bolt the cam gear to the cam, slide the crank gear on, lining up the keyway to whatever you want to run, i.e., retard, advance, 0*, the as soon as your timing mark on the crank gear and the cam gear are lined up, slide the idler gears in place, they are tight, so you might have to give the cam gear a little wiggle.

dont forget, you might need to clearance the block and/or the timing cover.

with mine, i had to clearance the cover.

enjoy them, you WILL fool people into thinking you have a charger, if you dont have one already that is.

should i leave the timing as it is for a basically stock 302? or could i advance/retard it a little?

how did you get it to clear the cover?

i had to grind off a tab in the timing cover, then it fit just fine.

depending on what you are building, i.e cam specs, displacement, etc, i dont know what to tell you about how to degree the cam.

i have it installed at 0 or "straight up", i believe the rule is if you retard the cam, your power band moves lower in the RPM range, but i could be wrong.

if its a stock 302, then i would go straight up with the cam timing

anyone have any sound clips of a N/A motor with a gear drive??
I know they have a whine but i have never heard it.

You can use a dremel to grind away material or a drill with a grinding disk on it. If you are cheap, you can get some playdough or clay to see where you will have clearance issues.

Gear drives sound just like a blower... They are very loud!

gear drive is lame

eats more HP and makes more heat, some say its harder on the cam bearings as well.

Grover-

I wouldn't say lame....more like pointless. Gear drives are kind of cool on older cars. They whine a lot like my wife or a vortech with straight cut gears. You are right about cam bearing wear. In fact they cause a lot of vibration compared to a chain. An SVO belt drive is the hot ticket but that's expensive.

Not all gear drives whine. Only the straight cut gears whine.

no, not pointless, just a path less taken.

they are some of the most accurate timing setups there are.

chains and belts stretch, gears dont.

i dont have any sound clips where you can hear the gear drive. the only one i have you can only hear the exhaust noise coming from the back out the emissions holes of the heads.

If you want to hear what a loud gear drive sounds like, go to a dragstrip, and stand next to one of those cars with the blower sticking up out of the hood. The "loud" versions (i.e. Pete Jackson gear drives,) are loud as hell. People who pull up next to you will hear nothing but whine, and if you get stuck in traffic, you'll probably get quite annoyed after a while. The edelbrock and PJ "quiet" versions are still whiney, and they get whinier the more they wear down.

They arent that loud on fords because of the cast timing cover.The Chevy's you can hear a block away.I can barely hear mine in the car(noisy type) and my buddies "quiet" isnt even noticable.
