Gear Install Price

This is a price qoute i got from Big Shot Dyno to have 4:10 installed on my 2000 GT. I didnt talk to them personally but I sent an e-mail to them and this was there reply:

$200.00 for labor and $400.00 for chip to calibrate for gear and tune. The gear runs about $180.00 plus a bearing kit. thanks

Do you guys think this is to much?

I'm going to e-mail him again because he didn't which brand of gears or chip.

Is there any thing else I should ask, or should I not even bother and try to find a cheaper place that dose it?

If anyone knows of a place that dose it cheaper around youngstown, ohio it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not too familar with pricing, but I do know you want to go to a very reputable shop to get them installed. I've heard copious stories of people getting their gears installed incorrectly and having to pay enarly double to have them taken out and done correctly. Good luck!

Gear Install

$200 for gear install is a good price. I paid $250 to get my 4.10s installed. $180 for gears is good as well but make sure they are FRPP. Motive gears would be around $130. BTW, I would only suggest FRPP gears. IMO it is not worth the $50 to be cheap on gears that may have problems later on.

Not sure about the chip? I paid $320 for my Predator tuner which allows you to change/alter the tune. A chip would have to be reburned if you needed a different tune for future mods. Hope this helps you! You'll love the gears!

You got a decent deal Congrats.
I payed 375 to have my FRPP 4.10's and bearing kit installed.
The DM Speedcal was 100 to install
and this was at a Driveline shop.

I just had 3:73 FRPP installed and got a Diablo Predator with it.
Gears $219, labor was $300, Diablo was $350, gear oil $20 and a $6 shop supplies charge?? Plus tax it all came to $988. Sounds like a lot but it made a big difference in my cars performance.

I paid 180 for my gears, $85 for the speedcal, $85 for the bearings and shims and gaskets, 50 for the trac-loc rebuild, and 290 for the install, and oil. so i spent a little over 600 total

i'm getting my gears installed on the side by a tech. He actually works for dodge, but he told me he would do the job for $100.00. i figured hey he may not be a ford guy but he's a long time and i mean long time tech and for a hundred bucks i couldnt' beat that at all.

Care to explain to me exactly what you think is inherently wrong with Motive Gears?
Any experiences you have had with a set?

I had a set I put in my last car that had a LOT of track time and had no problems at all? There are plenty of guys with Motive gears pushing a lot more HP than you EVER will in drag racing, and others putting them to more abuse in rockcrawling. If there was something inherently wrong with Motive Gears they would be out of business by now.

I would be careful. If you get it done at a reputable shop They will warranty that they have been installed properly.

I'm glad you like you Motive gears. I didn't say there was anything inherently wrong with Motive gears, only that I suggested FRPP gears instead. I have no personal experience with them, but my mechanic and other gearhead friends have had experience with them and they have had issues. I merely said that IMO I would get FRPP gears. Everyone is entitled to their opinion right?

my car is going into the shop for some new 3.73s in june. its going to be about $1100 CDN in total, the mechanic basically rebuilds the rear end, gears, bearings etc...

cant wait.

the guy who is doing the work has good reputation of standing behind his work, my uncle who works with him at dodge has had him do a bunch of work on the side for him so i think it's a good deal for me any way. A heck of a lot less money than anywhere else.

I just got 3.73's installed over the weekend:

New FRPP Gears purchased from dfwstangs parts forum- $100
Install by ford tech at the dealership + Underdrive pulley install (side work for him) - $250 (I had been quoted $75 for the pulleys so figure $175 for gears).

No bearings since only 14k on the car.

BTW.. I already have the Predator so don't need a speed cal.

You are correct, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
If you left it at "IMO I would get FRPP gears." that would be your opinion... but you stated

That statement implies that there is something wrong with Motive Gears.
I was just looking for some clarification as to what problems might someone have later on.

Out of curiosity could you tell me what issues your mechanic had? I would also like to know what kind of issues your gearhead friends that have had experience with them had.

Motive gears are a little bit more difficult to install, according to my mechanic. One of my friends broke a pinion on the strip w/ Motive gears, and 2 others have had gear whine even though it was properly installed. And lastly, I just had more confidence in a Ford product. I researched it extensively before I decided on which gears to buy. Other people I know have had NO problems w/ Motive.

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for and I am picky about the parts I put on my car. Maybe I'm overpaying and maybe I'm not--it's debatable. To each his own, but IMO I would spend $50 extra and get FRPP, period.

Gears are gears, the procedure is the same no matter what brand, any competent mechanic should have no problems.
With the cut Motive has on their gears a properly set up set of gears will not whine.
Broke a pinion….Damn!

It’s all good, I will probably end up with FFRPs 4.10’s myself soon, for no good reason I guess other than quite a few people have had good luck reusing the stock shim sizes.
