After ordering gears I started to wonder, when some people talk about there install, they comment on having spline axels replaced and a locker. What is havin a locker put in?
At first I thought it was being able to lock the front-end @ the track to heat up the rear end.
A "locker" is a differential that can physically tie the rear wheels together to prevent the dreaded "one wheel peel". If the car is street driven, a LSD (limited slip diff) should be fine. Your Mustang already has a "Traction Lok" LSD. The brake thing you're thinking of is a "line lock", a device that allows you to lock the brakes and hold pressure in the fronts while releasing the rears to do a big smoky burnout without hurting the rear brakes.
The factory installs 28-spline axles. The "28" refers to the number of teeth or "splines" in the end of the axle that engages the side-gear in the differential. 31-spline axles are stronger and are better able to withstand hard launches. If you make a ton of power and launch hard with a heavy car, 31-splines might be a good idea.
What else should I have put in with the gears, Not everything just whats needed?
Depends on the mileage and wear and tear. For a low-miles car, FRPPs M-4210-A ring & pinion install kit might be fine. This includes new shims, ring bolts, crush collar, seal and pinion nut. Assuming all the bearings and whatnot are fine, this should be enough.
If you've got a high-mileage car, you might step up to the 4210-B which includes new carrier and pinion bearings and races or the 4210-C which includes new axle bearings and seals too.
If you suspect your Traction Lok is weak you might take the opportunity to either upgrade to a new diff (Auburn, replacement Traction Lok, Torsen etc) or rebuild your factory unit with an M-4700-B rebuild kit.
What you need to do depends largely on what needs doing, as it were.
