I am installing all new rear end components and can not find anyone locally that knows how, so I guess I am stuck doing it myself. I am putting all new parts and need some help on the pinion depth, preload, and backlash. ANY HELP AT ALL???

Good luck. This isn't a job for the faint off heart if you have no idea what you're doing.

Myself and a buddy just did this not too long ago. He knew what he was doing and had the tools, I was just helping out.

What gears are you putting in? You'll have to grind the crosspin on the differential for 4.10 + gears. I did 4.30's in my car.

I am putting in 3.73 gears and I have already disassembled and did not measure the stock pinion depth. Oops, where do I go from here?

Measure your original pinion shim and pinion together. This is the total measurement you need to shoot for with your new pinion to get to the original depth. Measure your new pinion and select the proper shim that puts you closest to your original measurement. This method should get you by if you are using Ford gears.

I just changed my gears today, I used the top link posted by Grn92lx, It was the most helpful because he didn't use any special tools, just run off the mill everyday hand tools.
