I am looking into a set of 3.73 gears and was wondering the difficulty of the swap. How long does it take? Also anyone with these gears in a '96 GT know how much it makes the speedo off? I rode in an 88 with 3.73's and we were going about 65 mph but the speedo read well past 85. Probably going to be my next mod a long with a set of long tube headers to finish up my exhaust. What brand is the best for the gears? FRPP?? Thanks for your help!

Most people will tell you to have someone install the gears for you. It isnt a job that the beginner can do on his own. Just be safe and get someone who knows what they are doing to install them for you. Maybe theyll even let you watch so you can learn. Most people prefer the FRPP gears and you will need the Dallas speed cal to fix your speedo. Since you have an older one, you may be able to get away with just a new speedo gear. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Also how much would it run to have them installed by mechanic? I just sold my import and I new almost everything there is about them, can rebuild motors and what not (doing one right now) and then I come here and I am like what the **** are they talking about. So just bare with me I'm a quick learner. Thanks
Josh

I would definately read all you can about swapping gears before you attempt it. I helped do one on my cobra, pain in the butt. Well worth it though. If I had to guess 400 and up installed. You can pm me and I will write what I can remember. Good luck, chris

Yea you have to shop around but Id prolly pay at most 500 bucks for parts AND labor. A gear set can be had from www.mustangtuning.com for about 150 with free shipping.

All I can say is get it done correctly the first time, or you'll be getting headaches like I am now.

The install should take between 4-5 hours. I had a friend of mine who is a mechanic install mine and i am glad i did. I can turn wrenches a bit but that was out of my league. Setting the backlash is a pain in the but. My speedo was out about 30 Kilometers per hour with 3.73's, I live in Canada, yours woulbe be roughly 20 MPH over. You can get a speedo gear that fits right on the end of your speedometer cable that is attached to your transmission near the front of the driveshaft. It is a two minute install once you get under the car and find it. The gears are well worth it. I got FRPP and am very happy. Good luck and have fun.
