Friend of mine wants to put some 3.55 gear on his Mustang. Any ideas how much it will cost now day to do the gears in the Seattle areas ? I don't think you could get it done for less then $600/labor only.

Auburn Differentials have a trade in policy for your busted Auburn from once too many wheel spin in the water box,if your diff is less then 4 yrs old (build date in on the case ),they will replace it with a new one for $85. Too bad it won't work in my case.

If he is willing to drive somewhere to do it, it is usually between $300 to $400 in labor cause they say it is a 5-6 hr job.

KC Martin in Lynnwood told me it would be $450 to rebuild my trak-lok and install my gears if i brought all of my own parts. I'm also looking for somewhere to install my stuff. Going to call Bill's Custom Auto on Monday, i'll let you know what they say.

A lot depends on what you want done. If you have a low milage rearend that would only require ring and pinion and new fluid the cost should be around the $200 range for labor. If you needed all the bearings, races and seals replaced it would be a little more for labor. If your trac loc needs rebuilt add more $$. If you have a high milage rearend this would be the time to change the bearings, races, seals and rebuild the posi. The cost difference will be minimal compared to if you did this later down the road because everything has to come back out again and you would probably pay the same cost as the gear install again.

Just count on needing more than just swapping the gears. Lots of shops will charge you less, but some of the mentioned shops are doing the job correctly.
Not just slamming a set of gears in. I've heard of people getting charge for parts that were never installed also. Do a search on gear installs in this section. This topic has some up again and again.

Doing the gears correctly is VERY important. Someone who knows how to take measurements and do the setup correctly and will take the time to make it right is worth a few dollars more, no matter how cheap someone or some shop offers to just put it together for. Right Dane?
