Hey all. Looking into putting 3.73s into my 98. Two questions;
1) What are the stock gears in a 98? 2.73 or 3.27?
2) Is there a formula to calculate the change in gas mileage?

Thanks.

stock for your year is 2.73 aka horrible gears, 3.73 will benifit you in about .5 off your times, not bad huh?

I have an 01 with 3.27 gears stock, i put in 3.73 and wiht a manual city/highway mix i average 20-22 mpg on the sole interstate i would probably do around 25mpg. I would expect between 19-22 average if the car has been taken care of, fuel injector cleanring, fuel filter, all that little stuff is up to date, most cars however are not.

I agree 2.73 is the ****s. go with 3.73's. I can honestly tell you I barely notice a difference in gas mileage. I have 3.73's in my 98 and it makes a huge diff in acceleration and I find I get anywhere between 20-23 mpg. your car will be at about 2200 rpms while your doing 65ish, 2400rpms ~70ish. Something like that anyways. in the city if you drive normally keeping rpms below 2500 you won't notice a change in gas mileage.

Your in town gas mileage may go up, because of with the gear change, you will probably put the car in a higher gear than before.

That's not entirely true. Your gas mileage shouldn't change in the city, yes it is true you'll be in a higher gear than you normally are at a certain speed but your rpms will not be up any higher therefore the gas mileage will remain the same or pretty damn close to. It is on the highway where you will lose a bit.

Why would you lose mileage on the highway?
