I was wondering, how much would it cost to have a set of 4:10 gears installed? Or would it be better to spend the money on something else and leave in stock gears for a manuel tranny? I know how much the gears cost, but who should I seek out(maybe a ford dealer?) and what is an adverage on installation?

Or could I do them myself, granted I have no clue what to do atm.

I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself unless your pretty good since the backlash has to be adjusted to a pretty tight tolerance. DO NOT have Ford rape you on the install. Most will quote different prices for install depending on the part of the country. Go call some local speedshops to see what they charge.

Example...here install prices range about $250 bucks...labor only. Plus $100 for the rebuild kit.

Labor depends on where you are period. I have seen the 200 to 300 labor on installing gears and I still cant believe you guys are paying that much . Here in southeastern NC any of the shops do gears for 100 to 150, and most of the time its 100. I dont know why its so much cheaper here, I guess because of the amount of GOOD shops, there is at least 4 in the local area that have excellent records and repeat customers. And that causes all the competitors to keep their prices low so they can compete with the other guys. Not so good for the shop owners great for us.

I payed $325 to have my 4.10's installed. Love the acceleration!! Tho now that Ive payed to have gears installed in 3 different vehicles, next time I'm buying the tools n doing it myself. Since the only things I pay to have done are gear installs and alignment/mounting/balancing.

$240 for the install, is what I got quoted in my neck of the woods.
That included Friction Modifier and all the seals needed.
And fluid of course.

NO, gears are one of the best, most-felt mods you can ever do. 2v mods WILL benefit from a gear change.

If you don't know what you are doing, don't do gears by yourself. You will have the ability to mess things up seriously.

I would recommend doing some phone pricing, hit up your techie friends, or find a local car club; many people are willing to help--they just need the connection between teacher and student. You just have to look to find what you need. Good luck!

Since you said you have no clue what you are doing then dont do it yourself. I paid 250 at a Ford dealer to have them installed. There is nothing that helps mustangs more than gears do for the price, so do them.
