Gears! Do it yourself or take it to a Shop

Yeah that is what I figured but just the labor for the install is $400 so I was thinking if I can save that $400 I can get other parts.

Nope! I'm guessing I need that to do the install and it is probably expensive too.

well if you dont have a press then you need to find someone that can do it if you plan on doing it yourself.

I have done gear installs. Your correct is saying that the preload is 16 to 29 inch pounds. Preload is the resistance needed to turn the pinon assemble without the ring gear installed. You must tighten the pinon nut in small increments and remove your breaker bar and measure the preload with a inch-pound torque wrench. You must creep up on the preload setting. If you exceed it, you need another crush collar. It truely takes about 140 foot pounds of force to crush the collar. Anyone who has installed gears experience this.

It's so incredibly easy once you understand what to do. Took 3.5 hours my first time, but I had access to a lift. Read the link in my sig, and all links therein.

Well I took mine to the shop 3 times and so far every time they whine. They are telling me im making too much power for these gears and i need a hardened gear. Pretty much everytime I have brought my car to a shop sometihng gets ****ed up or something breaks so I have pretty much resorted to doing everything myself. Once I get tired of the whine(which isnt that bad this time) i plan on re-inswtalling gears/axles/ locker mywself in my garage/ parking lot if im in college.

I'm going to do mine myself when I get them but I have an auto craft center on post they have everything and the mechanics help you out for free when you hit a wall on somethin your doin if your nice to them

hey scott, to set the pre load can you do that with a normal clicking torque wrench? also how do i set backlash... thats all im confused about so far

Or take your pinion to any shop. $15 bucks and you're out the door.

I just got done doing a friend of mines. It took awhile but they have no whine and feel pretty good. I have done mine twice and his twice now. I'm almost a pro.

I dind't know how to do it when I started. However I am mechanicaly inclined and a machinest also (access to press).The hard part is crushing the crush sleeve. The other is setting the backlash between ring and pinion then preloading the bearings once its set.

There is a shop in pottstown PA that will advertises 3.73 motorsport gears for 300 installed. That doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. if you need or want more info, let me know.
