gears install

recently i got aggravated over high prices with installing gears so i decided that i want to install my own,does it sound like a good idea??? i have alot of mechanical experience but none installing gears,does anyone know where i can find the full info on lining the gears up?? pinion depth and backlash settings and procedures?? or should i just wait until i get the $600 to have the speed shop do it?

No, it does not sound like a good idea at all.

You will need:
Magnetic base dial indicator
Inch pound torque wrench
Skill
Knowledge
Experience

If you do not have these things or know someone that does, I recommend you have it done by your local Ford dealer or a good speed shop.

Definitely recommend getting someone else to do it. It is not an easy job like on some cars. I'm not sure a local Ford dealership will install even Ford Racing gears as I know I've inquired several certified Ford Service centers around my area and they don't do any kind of service with aftermarket parts whether its Ford Racing or not. $600 is for everything I imagine...I know by me its a little above $500 probably close to $550 once tax is included...so is it a bit more expensive, yeah but not that much.

it is hard to do ive done a couple on the floor with the car on jack stands and it is a PITA because you have to get the black lash the depth and the rotational torque and alot of other things thas why i wouldn't recommend it if you've never done them just have someone else do it if its $600 for everything that's cool because once in a while when you are taking the bearing off the pinion ring it gets damaged and you have to replace it.

I've gotta agree with Kilgore - not a good idea to take this one on yourself (practice on your friends F-Body first )
But seriously, how much is too much? It is an involved install. I paid $200 labor, plus fluids...ending up to be $220. To me, that's a bargain considering what is involved and the fact that it's something you don't wanna have to do twice (or f'up in the process).

It's because it is common sense.

Really......the gear install requires some tight clearances and measurements. I would have it professionally done.

their is also alot of things involved and the first time i did it i had to tear it down like 5 times and even guys who do this alot tear it up a couple of times and reset the whole thing

Dunno, I have just heard too many horror stories about blown rear ends and such.

Really, it's worth it to have a pro do it.

I am impressed with how many people do their own gears and at least don't tell us of the problems afterward. I have always worked under a lift.
Lay on the ground and try to get leverage for a crush collar? pinion shims? putting the carrier in and out a few times to get the shims right ( damn, I dropped one, did it come out the left or right ) If someone has the time , patience, decent tools and someone with experience, go for it. Otherwise this mod is best to be done by a shop.
