sorry this question isn't totally about a mustang but i still wanna know this cause i'm considering goin with a similar setup for my stang.....

my buddy has a 350 TPI iroc camaro that he's planning on putting a twin turbo kit on, and he says he's gonna go with 4.10 gears, i told him i don't think that this i good idea, he asked y and i kinda drew a blank....... i always thought this was a bad idea but i don't really know why. this is also one of the options that i've been pondering over for my car, (maybe not twin turbo for me) and i wanna know what gears would be good, i have 3.73's in there now, i'd hate to have to get new gears cause i just bought these 3.73's.

any input would help us both

Matters how much power he is putting out. I would say 3.27s for him. Stick with 3.73's for yourself. That is what I am getting.

when he puts that twin turbo in those 4.10s will be bad... go with 3.27

ya i figured they will be bad, but why?.... i couldn't explain to him why it was bad, i just knew it was.....

it will be bad because he will be shifting all the time, and will probably have no traction.

Gears are used as a torque multiplier in the same way that the first gear in your trans works. You'll notice that the 4 cyl. cars often have a lower first and rearend gear and that is to help them off the line and because they can sustain high rpms. A V8 doesnt need that kind of boost and so the first gear is usually a little higher, but then add a power adder and you can see that the car will be generating so much torque that multiplying it would be a fruitless venture. Also, as an added part who would want to be rocking high rpms on a blown engine on say a highway cruise or something. Thats unwanted wear if you ask me since I'd want the boost going when I actually need it, not when I'm just driving around.

It's better on boosted cars also not only the power but with a TT set up or most any boosted set up that consists of a turbo, you want the turbo 'loaded' not shifting every 5 seconds. He does not need 4.10's. Hell stock gears are fine too if he's pushing some power.

yeah, go with a higher gear (numerically lower) not only will he have no traction and high rpms on the highway like smock said but he wont be able to effectlively use the power band because hell go through it so fast

thanx for the help guys i showed it to him after we ripped his tranny out this morning. he smoked his tranny and instead of getting it redone he's goin to buy a truck and work on his car for the next little while, and goin pretty crazy with it from what he's been telling me.
