for all those pussies out there that love to pick on me when it comes to gears, and make a fight if i tell someone i recommend 4.10 gears minimum, and then you come out saying oh it will wine out on the highway, oh u can't hit 160 ur top speed goes down blah blah and all that misinformation because you've never actually tried those gears read this which comes from some guys who have submitted to stangnet. funny i dont see anything mentioned on stangnet to get 3.73s because "its the best all around gear" ya right! whatever! -- i have hit 145mph in a stock geared stang and stock motor in 4th gear. forget about using 5th with those tall gears...

Correct. They are great for a 4.6L -or so says the article.
BTW, does your mother know you talk like that?

the engine makes no difference. 4.6's came with 3.27s? well 5.0s came with 2.73s. all the more reason to get 4.10 gears on a n/a engine. even a 4 banger would benefit from 4.10 gears and posi.

I can't believe I'm wasting the time to answer this but here goes:

1) for a 28" tire, 4.10 rear gear and 1:1 trans gear (4 gear as you state) you would have to turn 7134rpm to hit 145mp...stock EEC has a 7000rpm fuel cutoff

2) stock EEC has a 134 MPH fuel cutoff

3) stock speedo only reads to 140 MPH so how do you know you hit 145?

4) 4.6L motors need more gear because they do not make the torque that the 302 does and their powerband is higher so the gears let you get into band quicker

5) 5.0L were available with option to select 2.73s, 3.08s and pretty sure 3.27s

Everytime you open you mouth on here you regurgitate garbage causing you to lose more credibility and quite frankly look like a fool to us. We are trying to help you when we say stop posting here!

hey are you an idiot? by using the rpm i am at and gear in transmission and finding out the trans ratios and using a calculator and tire size i can find out exactly how fast im going. and for your information a 5.0 with 2.73 gears can drive up to 168mph in 4th gear. 5th gear is enough to hit 280mph. where have u been mars? iwas crusing along at 5300rpms in 4th gear with stock 2.73 gears passing by some ricers that were racing, lik ethey were nothing. that equals over 145mph.

btw perhaps you should get some reading lessons. i think it said with a stock geared stang i was able to hit 145mph in 4th gear. hmmmmm OWNED!!!! when did i say i could hit 145 in 4th gear with 4.10 gears? thats ABSURD.

LETS PLAY THAT BACK AGAIN!!!

280 mph....do u think you drive a damn lambo.....? im afraid 5.0's dont have the aerodynamics to handle something like that....not to mention even if you are running z rated tires you can get like what, 168mph before entering blowout territory? and just so you know there's a little thing called a governer...so people like you dont blow up their engines. and as for pretty much everything else u said:

highest stock gear i believe was 3.08's. and yes you do lose top end because if you think about it you're wheels are spinning a lot faster than stock 2.73's. i even use 5th sometimes around town and that's at like 45mph. i cant imagine going 145mph, oh wait that's right, i can't. you'd be at like 6k rpms in no time

Raph - Again please quit posting here

90notch - It appears everything you said was right on but just so I can throw this in here...the 4.6L (96-98..."dogs") make the same amount of peak torque just 100rpm higher than a 94/95 5.0L...a very even match...but anyways...I appreciate you answering Raph130 even though he doesn't "deserve" it...

Please Raph...do something to get banned...

327's were available in some of the AOD's...

Also on the top speed thing...Raph is using these online calculators way to much...it is different in the "real world" when comparing mph to gears...first you can have the gear to do a theoretical top speed but you also need power/suspension/aerodynamics/etc...to reach that top speed...

Raph...go use your G-Tech

First off...
Ralph, I believe you've hit 145 in a stocker. Cripes, rags in the day were pulling high 130's. Pull the silencer, advance the timing, yank the cats... maybe some shorties... away you go.
I'm not certian what the point you are trying to make but, you go man.

Secondly...
The fuel cut off is at 6250.

Thirdly...
There is no speed govenor in the EEC. At least not below ~150 mph.

Fourthly...
My stock speedo goes to 149.1291mph aka 240kph.
Even if it did not, reading the tach and knowing what your gear ratio and tire size is... well, math you know.
Don't even try to tell me my tach is inaccurate... verfied on the dyno, and thru calc's.

And, one for everyone to jump up and down and cry about...
I've pulled 5200 in 5th with 4.10's and a 25.7" rear tire with stock motor.

Mike - if you've got the .675 5th gear ratio, my calcs show that to be about 143 and some change - that about right? And remind us how 'stock' is 'stock'? Long tubes, no cats, all the other usual suspects (silencer gone, timing, u/d's, etc.?)

That actually sounds about right to me. Based on tests I've seen, I've maintained that fully stock Stang would top out in the 130-135 range - largely because it can't pull up to peak power in 4th with the extremely long gears. With 2.73 gears, 4500-5000 rpm (stock engine's power peak) puts the car between 125-140 mph in 4th gear. OR, put gears in it to allow it to pull up to closer to peak power in 5th - and you can probably get somewhere into the high 135-140 range. Add a few more HP via your changes, and you get a bit more - 143-144. So your data seems to confirm that. And I think you know - you've got a really good one. On the other end of the spectrum, I expect there are some from a bad production day that will have a hard time topping 125 all stock (gears too). And the AOD's may have a tougher time unless they're held in 3rd; if they drop into 4th, top end takes a nose dive with the stock gear, even 3.08's.

Raph's stock car goes 160 in 4th by the way. His is 'special'.

cleanlx...I believe your missing the point with Raph...just do a search on his name and post and you will see...

Was the 5200rpm pull on a dyno or highway?

5spd - if you've followed CleanLX's posts, you'd know that the 5200 rpm pull was on the road. There's no aero load on the dynojet - given enough time, MY car will go about 180 in 5th on the dyno. The Mustang Dyno's can be programmed to similate aero load at the rollers - but it's a guesstimate at best because each car's aero characteristics are different.

raph is full of crap. that said...who gives a damn about top speed. when are you actually going to take it up to full speed? its not like we have an autobahn or something. and as far as going 145...even if he did i'd have to call him a dumbass. thats either real gutsy or really freakin stupid. personally im sticking with option B.
