I don't see where he specifys the 5200rpm pull on the road? And speaking of "pulled"...he put that he "pulled" 5200rpm...which makes me think dyno? I just wanted a confirmation...

Oh and I bet any stock 5.0 from the factory (stock untouched unbeat) could hit 125mph unless everything was "out of favor"...like more "frictionized" pavement/vert/AOD/etc...and then it would be close...but you know how I feel about "factory freaks" ...It's basically all in the engine wear...

I suppose it's a small distinction, but running it up to top speed on a lightly traveled Interstate seems less dangerous to me than some of the crazy stuff I've seen done usually by youngsters on our city streets and local 4 lane highways. Granted, stuff happens in a hurry at 150, but blasting up to 80 or 90 in a 45 mph zone with traffic all around and soccer moms in vans pulling out in front of you seems even more fraught with disaster potential to me.

5spd - my point on the 125'ers is that factory freaks go the other way too. For everyone that's freakishly quick, there's one that's freakishly slow. That's the nature of the bell curve. Clean LX wouldn't use that as an example unless it were relevant. It's not relevant if it came on the dyno - therefore, it must've been a top speed run in the real world.

I knew what your point was...that some are slow and some are faster (factory freaks in "both directions")...

I still don't see the factory freak idea...if you look at the "factory freaks" on here...like rsw007 that runs 13.002?...he has 210rwhp...with bolt-ons? Is that factory freakish power? Or if you look at 25th Mustang/cleanlx...they have had their cars on a dyno and tuned or viewed to maximize the potential their tracktimes show...plus a good driver...but I'd be willing to bet that in reality if all the 5.0's could go back in time ...that they would all dyno VERY similar numbers...of course depending on factors like tranny type/temp/etc...

i agree with you 100%. but i dont know what the quality of highways are where u live. but here in and near LA the roads are in horrible shape and the cops are everywhere. you'd have to worry about catching air, hitting a bump, random construction area, turns, other cars, and getting a damn ticket. and if you get caught doing that stuff out here these days theyll take away yer license and ruin the rest of your life.and these days, if they catch you street racing they'll crush your car. not to mention i think its about a thousand dollarr ticket for just watching. and im pretty sure insurance wont cover that......haha

Both the dyno (calcs) and real world top speeds are discussed in this thread...so I guess he could have made a "relevance" to either one...that is how I looked at it...

I think we are both thinking "must've"...it was just a confirmation question...not a doubt...

5spd,
was on a concrete freeway in Phoenix here.
Used to do it frequently, early Sunday morning (like 5am).
It's a stretch of freeway, 2 lanes wide, with a breakdown lane on both sides. 4' high concrete divider, wide gravel shoulders, like, at least another 5 lanes wide, and the entire stretch is fenced both sides, and no on or off ramps.
ANd, I only did it when there was no one in sight, which, at 5am on a Sunday is often.
Safe, smart, likely neither, but fun as heck... well... kinda scary actually... The car is still pulling at 5200, but, I always get out of it and start slowing for an on ramp that is ahead. I "think" it'd pull to 5500... but, don't know for certian.

And ya... I've seen some of Ralphs posts.

Ya don't do it in LA - you do it with a good radar detector on a run up to Vegas with friends in front of and behind you checking for all clear!

5spd - all you have to do is read magazine tests over the years to see the discrepancies in performance that have rolled out of the factories year after year. Of course there are performance discrepancies - sometimes quite large. No, they would not all perform the same. +/- 8-12% isn't an usual performance difference at all - which makes a big difference on dyno, the track, and in top speed. It's amazing to me that they're as close in performance as they are when you look at the complexity of the product the manufacturers are producing. And they're MUCH better today than they were even 10-15 years ago.

Well I am guilty of doing 147mph (by gearing trans ratio tire size)... I actually went past a cop when I did this & he didn't even bother.... never do it again in my life though... I turned the steering wheel for a slight turn & it stayed straight... to much lift in a mustang to run those kind of speeds consistently.

FWIW I had t-5z 2.73's cat back off road H headers advanced timing removed silencer & a very LONG strech of road

147 mpg is incredible fuel economy. Why would you think the cop would stop you for getting extreme gas mileage?
